Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard Survives Scorpion Attack
In the most recent 'Indiana Jones' flick, Dr. Jones tells his son that if he gets bit by a big scorpion, not too worry so much about its poison killing him. But if he gets bit by a small fella, "don't keep it to yourself." Thanks for the memo, Indy. Indie rocker Ben Gibbard must've been freaked out by that info last week, when he got bit by a small scorpion -- not once but twice. It happened in Death Cab for Cutie's dressing room last Thursday night, right as Gibbard was putting on his show pants for a concert in San Diego. After getting examined by EMTs, it was determined that Gibbard would be fine. Bassist Nick Harmer posted a picture of the scorpion on the band's blog and writes, "He said he has scorpion power in his veins. I'm still not convinced that he is 100% fine because nobody eliminated the possibility that it was a radioactive scorpion and that Ben will now develop super powers."
Too bad this happened just hours before Halloween. Otherwise indie kids across the country would've had a great new idea for a superhero costume. We're just glad it went that way rather than ending in a Death Cab for Gibbard.

A scorpion's "bite" isn't poisonous, it's their sting that injures/kills you dumba$$es!!!

Bitten by a scorpion?
How about "stung" by a scorpion.
alr126at 11-04-2008
Thank you! I was thinking the same thing. Scorpions do NOT bite, that's what that little thing is on the tip of their tail, a STINGER.

What are you.....like 12 years old? So I guess Mommy let you stay home from your special school today and Barney wasn't on TV. So all you had to do was correct people that were more intelligent than the author? Grow up little man!

You don't get "bitten" by scorpions, bees, wasps, or yellowjackets. You get stung! Do your homework before you write an article that thousands of people will read. Jeez...that's basic journalism!

Do your research AOL. Scorpions dont bite, they sting. And just because a scorpion is big in size does not mean it isnt poisonous. You can tell how venomous it is by the size of its claws. If its claws are big, it's less poisonous. If they are small, it carries alot more potent poison, making it possibly more lethal. Overall body size has nothing to do with that. On that note, only 25 out of about 1500 species of scorpion are truly dangerous and/or deadly to human.
Shannonat 11-04-2008
The size comment came from the Indiana Jones movie, not from the AOL writer. But yeah, not the best writen story I've read lately.

maybe it used its lil scorpion teeth lol and chewed on him for awhile lmao
llifetreeat 11-04-2008
In some cases the smaller the creature is the more venom they hold. Also you do not get bitten by a scorpion. I thought that was basic general knowledge.

OUCH... but not fatal if you are a reasonably healthy adult who is not allergic to that specific venom.
Having lived in the AZ desert for 53 years.. only stung once..but have seen hundreds and hundreds of the little devils even in my suburban house and my kid's school years ago was infested... very hard to get rid of, insecticide does not kill them.
My sting felt like I stepped on a sewing needle..and then the burning numbness worked it's way up my leg.. I was thinking it would get up to my heart and kill me.. but of course not..it settled in 3 of my toes after a day and it hurt like heck..tingling like when a limb goes to sleep but sharp little pin pricks.. for about a week.. until my body could work it out of the tissue... now if you want a gruesome "attack".. look at an untreated rattle snake bite... skin sluffs off and turns black and it really is very dangerous..
But don't worry so much about scorpions, unless you are very frail or if a baby is stung.. but still.. scary and ouch... sorry that happened to Ben.. but now he has had that experience and he can tell future generations all about it... S

I was swimming off shore (Daytona) last year and got bitten by a shark. I lost EVERYTHING from the neck down. Now THAT stung!!!!!

Scorpians don't bite, they sting.
neeseeat 11-04-2008
Ha-Ha! Too funny! You COULD get bitten by a scorpion
if it tryed to eat you AFTER killing you with the
venomous STING! Simple entemology. Most folks don't
really have to worry about it though, scorps venom is
not that bad unless you are allergic to it (rare). A
lot like bee sting or ant bite.

sspoodle -- I too have been living in the high
Mojave desert forever. I don't like those big
flourescent green ones. NEVER leave your shoes on the floor at night! These people shoud wake up just one
time to be greeted by an eight foot Mojave green sunning on the front porch! Wusses.
inzanadeeat 11-04-2008
I'd love to have seen that 8ft Mojave green. Especially since they usually max out at 4.5ft. Would have been an excellent specimen for research.
