Roy Orbison Gives Kevin Bacon a Run for His Money

In his song 'Thunder Road,' Bruce Springsteen delivers the now-classic famous line, "Roy Orbison singing for the lonely/Hey that's me and I want you only" with conviction. You're the boss, Bruce. But the thing is, even after death, Orbison himself might not be so lonely.

Consider this: the Dave Matthews Band toured with Springsteen in 2004, and Springsteen, in addition to singing about Orbison, also performed onstage with him at the 'Black and White Night' concert. And if a vague connection to Dave Matthews isn't enough to fight loneliness, there's always solace in being directly related to Julia Roberts. Oh yes, it's that game celebrities like to play when no one's looking: Six Degrees of Separation.

Orbison's peeps have set up an interactive version of the game online, where you type in the name of an artist or musician and, if you're lucky, it gives you the breakdown. We won't give you spoilers but we did find some interesting results for Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, Iron Maiden, and Joy Division. Of course, most of these share a common final degree via the Beatles (who have myriad direct ties to Orbison, including opening for him on tour in 1963).

Of course, with a new box set entitled 'The Soul of Rock and Roll' currently on sale at retail outlets, you could argue that Orbison is somehow connected to the check-out girl at your local Best Buy. Sure, it's a stretch. But isn't that why Six Degrees always works?
