David Bowie aka Ziggy Stardust
Ziggy Stardust may not be the first rock alter ego, but he certainly set the standard. Bowie's 1972 concept album 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' introduced the titular hero as a rock 'n' roll savior from outer space, but by the end of 1973 the "Martian messiah" had taken on a life of his own.
