On This Date in 1971: The Montreux Casino in Switzerland burns down during a performance by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, who lose all their equipment in the blaze. In attendance are members of Deep Purple, who are inspired to write the song 'Smoke on the Water' about the incident.The Almanac Advises for December 3: "A true artist looks for that spark of inspiration that will ignite into a fully realized work."
