Guitarist Joe Satriani Sues Coldplay
- Posted on Dec 5th 2008 11:00AM by Marc Schneider
Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani has accused the members of Coldplay of lifting "substantial original portions" from one of his songs and using it in the band's recent hit, 'Viva La Vida.' With his copyright infringement suit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles, the 52-year-old shredder is seeking damages and "any and all profits" from the group for allegedly plagiarizing his 2004 instrumental 'If I Could Fly.'It's not clear whether the complaint dives into specifics of the "substantial" similarities between the two songs. However, a quick, side-by-side listen to both tracks reveals a kinship between the melodies in Coldplay's verse and Satriani's main riff.
Neither Satriani or Coldplay have commented on the lawsuit yet.
This is actually not the first time Coldplay has been accused of borrowing other people's melodies for this particular song. Brooklyn indie band Creaky Boards slammed the British hitmakers over the summer, posting a video on YouTube alleging glaring similarities between 'Vida' and their ironically titled 'The Songs I Didn't Write.'

Coldplay is one of the best bands around. If anyone disagrees, don't listen to them! Viva La Vida is one of my favorite songs from Coldplay. Most of their songs are hits.

Hey, the Doors ripped off The 4 Seasons' C'mon Marianne intro for Touch Me, as The Scissor Sisters' did with the opening piano riff from December 1963 for their Don't Feel Like Dancing song. I think it's more of a complement than a rip-off.

However comments with words like stealing, copying, etc are stupid. Copyright will apply to the obvious, music, chord progression, melody and rhythm. no other songs should be involved-i feel the invention of an iphone app on it's way...could prevent this sort of thing.

you have to include them because of the song title."
The songs that I didn't write" Maybe Joe ripped them off?
The George Harrison wrote the song "My Sweet Lord", that was said to have used chords from a hit single from 1963 called "He's So Fine". And was litigated, an Harrison was guilty of plagiarism. The judge said it was "perfectly obvious . . . the two songs are virtually identical". And then he proceeded to award all the profits from George's album "all things must pass", What a crock a poop! Sorry Joe, no doe for you!
It couldn't possibly be that in the past they heard these songs and are implanted in their heads, but it doesn't mean when they wrote THIER OWN SONG that they were intentionally copying. Like one poster said their is a finite amount of music/songs and how they can sound. I am sure if I wrote music and lyrics that it would be strongly influenced by my love of music I heard all my life, but again that doesn't mean I am copying intentionally or not.

Maybe I shoulda sued myself!! :-D
December 07 2008 at 5:45 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat's a pretty blatant rip-off & I hope Satriani prevails in his lawsuit.I also agree with the other poster who complained about Kid Rock ripping off both Skynyrd & Zevon on his recent tune & think they should be getting something back fro Kid's hit from that tune. There really is no integrity in music these days what with all the rap bands "sampling" bits from hits in the past etc.As a songwriter myself I know that when you write a song you need to be careful if you want to write something truly original. On the other hand many of today's bands don't care about being original & will do whatever it takes to make a hit.

also spotlight is reminiscent of a stevie wonder song but i haven't put my finger on it yet...these things happen....usually unintentionally...i'm a songwriter and it's amazing when you screen your ideas and make sure they aren't already out there
