After 50 Years, Tom Jones Finally Writes Song for His Wife

Tom Jones' wife deserves some kind of award for patience. After more than 50 years of marriage (51, to be exact), Jones has finally recorded a love song to his spouse, Linda. 'The Road,' featured on his new album, '24 Hours,' reveals that no matter how far he travels -- and this is a man who still plays 200 gigs a year -- the road always leads back home.

He's quick to explain the deficit ... kind of: "Love is a thing you never have to say, or something like that, isn't it?" he tells Spinner, slightly twisting the classic 'Love Story' line, "Love means never having to say you're sorry." "Anyway, if you're in love with somebody, you don't have to keep saying it," he says, digging himself deeper.

In his own defense, he says that throughout his career,"[Linda's] always loved the songs that I've done so I'd never really thought about writing a song for her." That is until his co-writer, Lisa Green, asked him the secret to his marital bliss. "I said, 'Well, the road always leads back to Linda.'" And 'The Road' was born.

He played the song for Linda with the caveat that it was not a word-for-word declaration of affection. "There's a line in there -- 'Left you shattered on the ground.' My wife would not be standing for me trying to shatter her on the ground," he says. And that is how you get to your golden anniversary.
