Coldplay Respond to Satriani's Lawsuit

Sorry, but not really -- that's the message Coldplay seems to be sending to real-life guitar hero Joe Satriani regarding similarities between his song 'If I Could Fly' and Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida.' As reported last week, Satriani has taken legal action against the band in a plagiarism lawsuit. In a statement to TMZ, Coldplay responds to the allegations after first recognizing Satriani's skills as a shredder and songwriter. But, they claim, any similarities between the two pieces of music are "entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write the song 'Viva La Vida.'"
Of course he didn't -- one is a guitar-rock instrumental and the other is a pop song. But did the latter intentionally borrow from the former? That is the question. In response, Coldplay is playing it cold. "We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances," they say, "and wish him well with all future endeavors."
No word yet on whether or not Satriani will, indeed, just accept their assurances or if, for that matter, his future endeavors involves the pursuit of a plausible plagiarism lawsuit.
