Best Songs of 2008: No. 4

'Paper Planes,' M.I.A.

The electronica queen from Sri Lanka composed this jam with trusted conspirator Diplo, borrowing the main riff from the Clash's 'Straight to Hell.' Already sold? While parents may worry that it encourages students to daydream about the gangsta life, the song is more likely a satire of immigrant stereotypes. Regardless, as long as she keeps delivering tracks like this, M.I.A. can go bang, bang, bang, bang, and click, ka-ching, and take our money any day.

Exactly. it was 2007
...i guess it got popular in 08...but thats when it got played out in my opinion because next thing you knew everyone was playing that song...and i love M.I.A 2 death, but when it started being played everywhere, it annoyed me big time.
If anything, start playing more songs off the album, not just that one.

but with all that said, paper planes is still hot

Don't blame moms...I listen to MUCH better music than the crap on this list. Actually though, this is one of the few songs I've heard on it, or would leave on! It's kind of cute, even though my daughter said the woman admits to being tonedeaf. lol
BTW The music on this list is why I subscribed to Spinner for only one year back in the day. I've always listened to all kinds of music and enjoy alternative sounds, my 16 year old gets AP now (a gift from 'my other daughter', one of my oldest's bf).
I've once again given up on regular radio for the most part and listen to a fantastic Christian station that is more geared at teens-20s. There's some GREAT music out their in the Christian field and crossing over. IMO
My station:
http://www.yeshome.com/ (there's a listen live option, and links to lots of bands).
www.feedthebeat.com (if you want to find probably new music to you, though between us we knew more than half of them).

I like that song, but you can only listen to it for a while, then it just gets old.

I HATE THIS SONG, not trying to say that the song is bad, just in my opinion i think this song should've gone like in the end of the list (a compromise for how bad the song is, shouldn't even be on the list)!!!!

Catchy tune... pretty repetitive though.
If it were done by someone African American with a big boom-boom bass line--it would be RAP!
Agree...its too high up on the list. There are better for the #4 position.

As said before, THIS SONG ISN'T EVEN FROM THIS YEAR!! I knew it was gonna end up on this list though thanks to all the ban wagon fans! It makes me hate it now even thoguh I loved this song last Summer when it came out. I'm still gonna marry her though.
