On This Date in 1988: 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn,' by Poison, shoots up to the No. 1 position on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart.

The Almanac Advises for December 24: "While horticulture may not at first seem like a career for macho men, it takes a lot of physical labor to do properly. Being a landscape architect, for example, entails digging in dirt and a love for working outdoors."
