Our take: After a few pints at his local pub, Craven Walker noticed a liquid-filled lamp made of cocktail shakers and old tins. The original inventor had died, so Walker resolved to improve the design and market it himself. Initially, retailers found it vulgar and gaudy, but sales of the lava lamp soared during the Sixties, which caused Walker to gleefully declare, "If you buy my lamp, you won't need to buy drugs." Someone should have bought Jim Morrison a lava lamp.
