Slash Battling Lily Tomlin Over Zoo Elephant

Slash is duking it out with actress Lily Tomlin over a proposed state-of-the-art educational habitat for endangered Asian elephants at the Los Angeles Zoo.Tomlin wants Los Angeles City Council officials to scrap a campaign to build a new Pachyderm Forest for the Zoo's resident elephant Billy, and instead allow the creature to retire in a California sanctuary.
But Slash is a fan of the proposed state-of-the-art new educational habitat for Billy and other endangered Asian elephants. "I just want everybody to try to support this cause because it's very important," the one-time Guns N' Roses guitarist said in a statement. "Billy has been taken care of at the zoo for about 20 years. He has four keepers, who have been at his beck and call, taking care of him and providing him with optimal medical care and everything else that he needs."
But self-professed animal lover Tomlin called on officials to halt the Pachyderm Forest project, insisting the elephant's longstanding quarter of an acre home at the zoo is inhumane. "The habitat is simply not big enough, and no habitat in a zoo is big enough for an elephant," Tomlin said. "They are mammoth and majestic and beautiful and sensitive, and, for generations, we have put elephants in zoos."
We sense this is something that can't fairly be settled by a nice game of 'Guitar Hero.'

I'm with Slash on this one. Most children would never have an opportunity to see an elephant if it wasn't for organizations like the LA Zoo. The new facility will be a big improvement for the elephants as well.

So it's okay if an animal is suffering, as long as your kids get to see it... Listen to yourself!
Minetteat 1-19-2009
Sure Amber. What do you really know about it? I'm betting nothing. How much research have you done on the subject? I'm betting none.

This elephant has done her time....now let her retire

I'm also with Slash that this elephant that has been in captivity for years would fare no worse in an upgraded habitat with concerted care and would give countless children a chance to experience a spectacular animal no other way. However, on another note... People, it's NOT "Beck and Call." The correct use of the phrase is "Beckon Call." There is no such thing as a "beck" except as the exceptional musical artist, Beck.

Taxpayers cannot afford to spend money to increase the elephant space at the Zoo. Besides, have any of you ever Googled 'elephant sanctuary Tennessee' to see just how wonderful a place it truly is?? http://www.elephants.com/sanct.htm 2700 ACRES!! and there's another on the West Coast. GIVE THIS LONELY ELEPHANT A BREAK BEFORE IT DIES.

I have to agree with Lily Tomlin on this one, a lousy quarter acre is NOT enough land for an elephant to live in, even if he has people bringing him food, water medical care etc. How would you like to live in your living room 24/7 even if someone was bringing you food, water and medical care.....
tshorsesat 1-16-2009
The new habitat isn't a quarter of an acre - it's 6 acres! Get your facts straight before you comment about something you obviously know nothing about!

That sounds good to me.

I think 1/4 acre is plenty of room for an elephant to flourish. My ex-wife has less and is doing just fine! :)
Gregat 1-17-2009
Are you kidding? I'd love to live in my room all the time with free food, water, and medical care
dunaetzat 1-19-2009
I agree that a quarter of an acre is not enough for an elephant to live in. The current enclosure, which all agree is too small is about 1/2 an acre. The Pachyderm Forest which is under construction is almost FOUR acres!!!!!

I'm with Lily on this also. A quarter acre is hardly large enough for a dog let alone an elephant. We have studied dinosaurs and saber tooth tigers without having them caged to look at.
oreokingat 1-19-2009
So we should wait until elephants are extinct to study them?
Annat 1-19-2009
Yeah. Let's see Dinosaur vs elephant in 1/4 acre. I rather see an Elephant there than the dinosaur. But I cannot believe that the Elephant has only 1/4 acre. Which he does not cause I just checked. He has .86 of an acre which 3/4 of an acre. His new home will be six acres and he is probably getting a girlfriend or two. In the wilds he would have a 50/50 chance to live his full life expectancy. He would have disease, foot shortage, water shortage, poachers, other bigger and meaner elephants to deal with. So lets weigh the reality here. Dying a slow death in a poacher's snare or the possibility of living a full life expectancy with two girlfriends he won't have to fight for.
speedyat 1-19-2009
Great argument... EXCEPT...DINOSAURS ARE EXTINCT!!! smoke another one!
Christyat 1-16-2009
Six acres isnt enough either. Elephants in the wild roam over areas much, much larger than that. Face it-- zoos are cruel. They can take care of the animals very well, and most do, but the bottom line is-- animals don't belong in zoos, just like law abiding citizens don't belong in jail. It's the same thing. With smaller animals we can often rationalize: "No predators! Food is brought to them! Climate controlled!" Weak arguments, but if they convince people, I guess it works. There are no arguments that can convince me that a zoo is "suitable habitat" for large African mammals. No way, no how.
kylagwolfat 1-16-2009
You may not like zoos but in all honesty they serve a purpose like it or not. One they give children the chance to see the animals they may never otherwise know about. Two by giving them that opportunity the child MAY become interested enough to want to work with said animals in some capacity. Three some of those animals probably would be extinct if not kept in a zoo environment.
So zoos while maybe not the ideal situation for animals is better than some of the alternatives that are out there. Most zoos take wonderful care of their animals. Maybe if people took more time to learn about the zoos in their area they may become fans of or maybe try to help change them for the better. As to putting all the animals in a sanctuary situation that is not always an option since zoos tend to be in populated areas. Now here in San Diego we have both types of parks but that is not the norm. Also who is going to PAY to have the sanctuaries built. More than likely its going to come out of tax payer money which right now with the ecconomy being what it is that is not likely to happen anytime soon.
dottyat 1-16-2009
Let's put them in a space like that and see how CRAZY they get, well crazier!
firehavenat 1-16-2009
So what? We just turn 'em loose, because it's inhumane to keep them? hmmm...imagine that...elephants living naturally...how sweet...but it will sure cause a traffic jam...folks should deal with reality instead of pie-in-the-sky. He's in captivity and they are trying to make his life better...so because better isn't good enough...then they shouldn't change anything? One step at a time. And since I'm not an elephant, I sure don't presume to know what he thinks about all this...as some folks do.
