The last time we checked in with New York-based rockers Plushgun, the four-piece electro-pop outfit was prepping for an industry-saturated showcase at Austin's South by Southwest. Since then, the band, which started as the solo project of lead singer-songwriter Dan Ingala, has found itself on the fast track to the top of the indie rock food chain.OurStage sent Plushgun on their trip to SXSW after the band started to make noise on the website, winning first prize in the alt-rock category in January 2008, for their song 'Dancing in a Minefield,' and placing in the top 10 on numerous other occasions. It paid off. Tommy Boy Records was in attendance and offered the group their first record contract -- a deal that will culminate in February with the release of 'Pins and Panzers', Plushgun's debut full-length.
The buzz surrounding the album is palpable. Ingala and Co. have been selling out major venues in L.A., Boston and NYC, and have been earning praise for their new video for the single 'Just Impolite,' which features actress Brittany Snowe. But she's not the only celebrity digging the quartet's dancy brand of pop. Rainn Wilson of 'The Office' created his own video for 'Impolite' and posted it on YouTube. And musician/scenster Andrew W.K. is on the record as a fan as well. One thing is for sure: Plushgun is becoming a bona-fide artist to watch in 2009.
