Many fans have returned from Slipknot concerts battered and bruised after being caught in the mosh, but hobbled as they may be, they always find their way home. Sadly, that wasn't the case for Cory Nickels, 29, who left a Slipknot concert on Sunday night in an ambulance. Shortly thereafter, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, he was pronounced dead.According to local newspaper the Daily Nonpareil, Nickels collapsed on the concourse level of the Mid-America Center (also in Council Bluffs, Iowa) immediately following the concert. After seeking medical attention, he reportedly suffered cardiac arrest. An investigation and autopsy are both underway. His friends, meanwhile, told reporters that heart problems ran in Nickels' family.
As is par-for-the-course, nearly 30 people were treated on-site by medical staff during the actual show for minor injuries. Most of the wounds were of the kind commonly found in areas where moshing naturally occurs. Nickels collapsed on the concourse level, far removed from any mosh pits.
The Slipknot camp has made no comment or statement about the death, at this time.

Sensationalism. The unfortunate gentleman had heart trouble. If a man died of heart trouble at a Wayne Newton concert it would never had made the news. "News" like this gets reported and all that will be remembered is that a fan died at a "shock rock" concert. Concert venues will want to charge more because of insurance liabilities thereby resulting in even higher ticket prices for fans. I'm a 40 year old woman with a Masters degree and Slipknot concerts are the best shows I've ever seen.

Jen, I love you!

Hooray for you Jen! I'm a 47 year old corporate secretary and Marilyn Manson concerts happen to be my personal favorites. You are so right - because this happened at a "shock-rock" concert, it will be sensationalized in a negative way against the shock-rockers. These guys work extremely hard to put on fantastic shows and all people hear are the negative things that happen at them. It's a shame......

Hey Jen ya DUMB C*** Wayne Newton concerts dont have mosh pits. Hundreds of people a year are seriously injured in mosh pits every year and you rarley hear about it. GET A LIFE
Jerryat 1-28-2009
Hey Sgreene69 you're a moron. This person didn't die in a mosh pit, he had a problem in the concourse area and died later. He was nowhere near a mosh pit. Jen's point was that if someone died in the concourse area at a Wayne Newton concert, it wouldn't have made the news. Read the story next time before you start spewing your stupidity by calling names. How about you GET A LIFE????

right on jen! im 13 and i have been to a few met/hard rock concerts (in flames, all that remains, linkin park, atreyu) and i have gotten in to a few of the moshes. they were bad but no one died

This is terrible! While I am not a fan of Slipknot per se, I have seen them perform while attending other concerts in the past (Ozzfest). While I understand that this type of music makes people want to "mosh" I think it is horrible that these fellow fans couldn't even help the poor guy. It's because of things like this that I make sure I am in the seating areas for these types of concerts. As someone who's had back surgery, I am afraid to be in the general admission area for this reason. It's time for these "kids" to grow up and have respect for their fellow concert goers. Since when is beating on people until they bleed considered having a good time? Those "animals" at that concert should be ashamed of themselves...

Did you read the article. " Most of the wounds were of the kind commonly found in areas where moshing naturally occurs. Nickels collapsed on the concourse level, far removed from any mosh pits." This is directly from the article. No where in the article did it say his friends who were seated with him didn't help. I recommend you read the complete article before you comment on it.I personaly have no interest in mosh pits but would never judge those who do.

If you can't handle the general admission DON'T BUY GENERAL ADMISSION TICKETS. Don't ruin it for everybody who buys those tickets. I am so tired of everytime I go to a show with general admission there are people that think everybody should just stand there because they don't want to be part of what is going on. If you don't like it, don't go. And I am not a "kid". I am a 30 year old, well educated person.

dude you dont have to be in the mosh pit its your choice so we do respect the others that dont want to we dont go running up to random people and punch them in the face you just need to see that were not animals were much less than that were maggots mother fucker

Your sweet jeepman92. I'm just counting the days til the Baltimore show. Slipknot on Friday the 13th...maybe they'll do something special for us!

to danid1465:
Where exactly did the story state that no one assisted the gentleman in question? You won't venture into the general admission area because of your back issues. Presumably Mr. Nickels was also aware of his limitations as he was "far removed from any mosh pits." If concert goers choose to place themselves in the "pits" they have only themselves to blame for injury. Calling them "animals" illustrates that you lack respect for your fellow concert goers, the same accusation you make of others.

Jen,
A few years ago, I went to see Primus. I've been a big fan of their's since I found one of their tapes at one my bands' gigs about 16 years ago. In this particular case, I just left my chiropractor a few hours before the show. I wanted to actually SEE the band this time (the last time was at Lollapalooza and I was WAY up in the back and could only hear them). So, I decided to get as close to the stage as I could. I had NO idea there weas going to be any moshing going on, there wasn't at the other show when I saw them, so, I'm stood there about 15 feet from the stage and suddenly, someone I've NEVER met before comes CRASHING into me at the base of my spine!!!! I hate to tell you, Jen, but that is NOT respect for fellow concert goers!!!! If you want to inflict bodily harm on your friend knowing that they are as masochistic as you, that's fine, but DON'T do it to total strangers just because they happen to be in the mosh area! Once you start moshing your friends, those that don't want to be there and get hurt will surely move out of the way. I go to concerts for the music and the performance, NOT to be beat up!!
When you listen to Slipknot at home, do you mosh around the room? Do you mosh your parents or grandparents and trample your pet if they happen to be in the area of your personal mosh pit?
AgentTwelveat 1-29-2009
I fully agree with you, Jen. People need to be aware of their limitations. I weigh 95 pounds, therefore I stay aware of the fact that I am tiny and know my limitations; I know that there is a good chance that I will get hurt in a mosh pit, so I pay attention to that. Madrachod, and everyone else who keeps talking about "respecting other concert goers," one of the main things about metal shows is the intensity. If people were forced to sit in seats and not have the ability to mosh, people would not go! Take responsibility for yourself and think (and respect) your limitations, and stop blaming other people and saying that others need to do the respecting. If someone can't handle the floor, go to the back. It sucks, yeah, but don't expect others to calm down just because you have an injury or don't want to play with the big dogs. It is all about taking responsibility for yourself and knowing what you can and cannot handle.

Anyone who would find this form of "entertainment" appealing has bigger problems than a heart attack.
Jesus saves, not Obama
brrrrkat 1-28-2009
You know, I'm not a fan of shock rock... unless you're talking about the original shock rocker, Alice Cooper. But having said that, J, I have a suggestion for you. If you don't like Slipknot, don't buy their CD's or go to their concerts. You're happy because you aren't exposed to their music, and I'm happy cause I'm probably not going to be exposed to the narrow minded likes of you.
madrachodat 1-28-2009
Jesus dosn't save, either. He's been dead for 2000 years.
Vickiat 1-28-2009
Madrachod, I'm so sorry that you had to deal with that. however, I've been to quite a couple metal concerts and I can honestly say that most people are very respectful and will only mosh people who are in the mosh pit. Don't judge slipknot fans because of one idiotic primus fan. I'm with you Jen. If this had happened anywhere else, it would hardly be news.
