I think the point was that if he wasn't famous, he'd have been happy still being heavily involved in music... He'd still feel fulfilled as long as he got to work with music. I've seen tons of former band students affectionately refer to themselves as "band geeks". I think he just means the guy would still be happy being unknown as long as he got to perform.

Is there anything wrong with that?! There are several talented musicians in my family. One uncle has been a high school band director for over 30 years. His sons also chose careers in music; one is an assistant professor of music at UW-Madison, the other is a music teacher in a private school. Another uncle has been with a local band for almost 20 years as a keyboard player (his "day job" is a designer/installer of aluminum pool cages). If you've got the talent and desire to do it, more power to you!
