Lily Allen Opens Up About Miscarriage

Lily Allen has proven time and time again she can dish it out as well as she can take it -- just ask celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, with whom she moved her ongoing feud to Twitter earlier this week. But even she admits there are times when the war of words is wrenching -- especially when the words aren't true, but hit close to home nonetheless.

Spinner caught Allen in a rare -- at least publicly -- contemplative and often serious mood when we talked to her about her new album, 'It's Not Me, It's You.'

There were no laughs when we asked what was the worst thing she'd ever read about herself that wasn't true. "There was a lot of stuff when I miscarried my child, you know, that people wrote really negative things about," she says. "Why they thought I miscarried, like I'd been drinking or smoking or that kind of stuff. It was really upsetting."

Allen suffered a miscarriage in January 2008. The father was her then-boyfriend, Ed Simons, who is one-half of the Chemical Brothers. The pair has since split.

We asked her if she has thought about not reading the papers to avoid such hurtful stories, but she says they're hard to miss. "I have, but sometimes it's difficult to avoid if you read the papers, which I do," she says. "I like to know what's going on the world and sometimes, I can't help [seeing] things about myself."

Well, Luke you got the attention you wanted with your comment. I hope that you are satisfied that you have pissed off half of the audience on AOL~take a bow, mother f---er. The rest of you and your replies to him are pretty funny though.
I swear to god only an ignorant male who has in no way, shape, or form gone through something like that could say something so retarded. You know something, Karma is a bitch. And not that I ever wish anything bad on anyone, because I don't, but what goes around really does come around, and those words WILL bite you in the ass someday, Luke. So, you really should watch what kind of rotten things you say to people, and telling someone who has lost their child that you have no sympathy for them, and assuming it's because of their lifestyle is pretty shitty. No one understands this UNLESS you have lost a child yourself. I lost my first son when I was 21 and the doctors all told me that i was young and could have more and that didnt change the fact HE WAS STILL MY SON!
Who are we to judge her? Getting pregnant changes a lot of people and maybe it did the same for her.

As someone who hosts a site on miscarriage, where women vent and often feel so alone, I'm at least glad to see that a celebrity shared her feelings about it. Too many times women are left isolated. I am very sorry for Lily's loss- I don't know the circumstances. Bringing miscarriage and the grief left in its wake in a very public way is critical to increasing miscarriage awareness. I know what I wrote was more about miscarriage than about Lily, but that's what I'm most passionate about- be it a celebrity's loss or anyone else's. We all have feelings and experience pain- famous or not. However, when someone famous miscarries, the awareness is brought to the forefront of the public's eye- at least for a little while. That's about the only up-side to Lily's loss. My heart does go out to her and to all women and their families who have lived this terrible pain.
