Emily Haines has seen a lot of musical action over the past ten years. The singer/pianist is an original member of the Broken Social Scene and released a few stellar records of her own. But when it came time write some new songs for her main gig, Metric, Haines wanted to break away from her normal routine."I was literally looking online and being like 'OK -- room, Steinway, piano, room,'" Haines tells Spinner about her quest. "Then I found this place in Buenos Aires that had this beautiful Steinway piano in this old French-styled apartment. I didn't know anybody there or anything -- it was the best thing to do."
After her time in Argentina, Haines joined the rest of the Metric crew and recorded 'Fantasies,' the band's fourth album. "I feel like we got a sense of optimism, a sense of openness and possibility," she says about the record. "I never wanted to participate in being, like, a chick at the piano on the verge of tears."
The band's upbeat approach has already paid dividends with the accidental single 'Help, I'm Alive.' "It got leaked by accident," Haines says about the song. "But then it ended up getting played on all these legit radio stations and went to number one in Canada. We really feel like a song escaped out of the back door of the studio. We're proud of our escaped track."
'Fantasies' will be released, intentionally, on April 14th.
