Troubled Singer Quits Barenaked Ladies

Getty ImagesSinger/guitarist Steven Page has left the Barenaked Ladies "by mutual agreement." The news came in a joint announcement by Page and the band on BNL's website on Tuesday.

"These guys are my brothers," writes Page, who plans to pursue solo projects including theatrical opportunites. "We've grown up together over the past 20 years. I love them and wish them all the best in the future."

"It's the start of a new chapter for all of us," wrote bandmate Ed Robertson.

2008 was a rough year for the band. First Page was charged with drug possession in upstate New York last July, just weeks after the Barenaked Ladies released a children's album, 'Snacktime.' Then, in late August, Robertson crashed his float plane in the woods north of Bancroft, Ontario .

In October, Page agreed to a plea deal that would result in the felony drug charge being dropped if he stayed out of trouble for six months.

Robertson reveals that BNL plan to hit the studio in April, and return to the road in the fall.

***Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies will be giving his first interview announcing the departure of lead singer Steven Page on Mix 98.5 in Boston today. Tune in here at 4PM EST.
