Mastodon Bring Metal Madness to Scion Rock Fest

Every ticket stated "Does Not Guarantee Entry" in bold for the Scion Rock Festival at the Masquerade in Atlanta this past weekend. That phrase loomed over the free metal fest since the line-up was announced over a month ago. A fear that hundreds of fans wanting to see the biggest metal fest in North America could be denied entry, gave way to riot rumors. But the fest went off without a hitch; well, aside from Nachtmystium being kicked off the bill a few days prior for their slight connection to Nazism through a record label. The outdoor main stage featured metal gods Mastodon, as well as soon-to-be gods Torche, Kylesa, Boris, Baroness and the big daddy of doom and gloom, Neurosis.
Meanwhile, inside the Masquerade, fans let loose and gave more energy than the bands themselves. Converge cracked jokes about Scion cars to a sea of metal devotees, as the wood floors gave warning cracks that shot up folks' spines. It was a weekend of insanity that can only be best described with photos. So, without further ado:
