Two of the indie world's biggest darlings have gone to war, as Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne let loose on Arcade Fire in an interview with Rolling Stone. "I'm a fan of them on one level, but on another level I get really tired of their pompousness," Coyne told the magazine. "We've played some shows with them and they really treat people like s---. Whenever I've been around them, I've found that they not only treated their crew like s---, they treated the audience like s---. They treated everybody in their vicinity like s---."Oh, but he didn't stop there. "People treat Arcade Fire like they're the greatest thing ever and they get away with it. Those sort of opinions change my view of their music. They have good tunes, but they're pricks, so f--- 'em."
Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler, not surprisingly, took offense, turning to the scrapbook section of the band's website to respond. Butler starts by expressing his admiration for the Flaming Lips, recounting the one show the bands played together in Vegas three years ago, and his excitement at meeting Coyne. But Butler doesn't quit without getting in some jabs of his own.
"I can't imagine a reason we would have been pompous towards Flaming Lips, a band we have always loved all those years ago," Butler writes. "Unless I was more jet-lagged than I remember, I hope I was less of a 'prick' than telling Rollingstone (sic) that a bunch of people I don't know at all are really a--holes. As a closing note, the main point that I am offended by in this whole thing is for Wayne to say we treat our audience like s---."
Stay tuned for Round Two.
