Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy' launched a cover off heard 'round the world. Recently, M.I.A.'s 'Paper Planes' did the same. Is T.I.'s 'Whatever You Like' next in line? If so, California singer-songwriter Anya Marina has first dibs. Marina first heard the song in a club while on tour with the Virgins, and it has since made its rotation into her live set. "I was like, 'What is this song everyone is singing to themselves, out loud?'" Marina tells Spinner. "I thought the melody was so cool."Next to the melody, Marina was also drawn to the song's subject matter. "I love how much you learn not only about American culture, but hip-hop culture within that song," she says. "You learn about what [T.I.] values. There is so much passion there -- I love how open and honest he is, about his total carnal want for her."
Marina has just launched a nationwide tour in support of her album, 'Slow and Steady Seduction: Phase II,' a charming, understated collection of jangly, acoustic tunes. But was there a phase one? "The original 'Art of Seduction' book, phase one has something to do with creating an unforgettable impression," Marina explains. "And phase two is leading astray and causing a mixture of pleasure and pain. But if you're being literal, it could be a nod to my first record or it could be whatever you want it to be, if you're a perv."
