For the past few months, photos of Trent Reznor and Jane's Addiction in the studio have led to all kinds of rumors about their collaborations. Though their teaming for NINJA, one of the summer's hotly anticipated tours, has been announced, the results of that studio time have remained a mystery, until today. The combination, with the help of Alan Moulder and Atticus Ross, both of whom have worked with Reznor for years, led to three songs, two of which, 'Whores' and 'Chip Away,' are available for free today on the tour's official site. The songs are part of an exclusive EP available on the site that also includes unreleased tracks from Nine Inch Nails and Street Sweepers (Tom Morello's new project, also on the tour).
Longtime Jane's followers will recognize the song titles, as they appeared on the band's debut, the independently released, self-titled live album. "It was a live recording, so we went in the studio with Trent and did two of those," Perry Farrell tells Spinner. The third track is one they wrote together called 'Laughing Beats.' Farrell is so excited about it that it may show up on the tour.
Jane's drummer Stephen Perkins tells Spinner that going in the studio with Reznor was a no-brainer. "When Trent says, 'Hey, you guys want to go in the studio?' it's like, Let's go,'" he says. "If Daniel Lanois says it, if George Martin says it, Bob Ezrin -- these are some of the great producers of our time so we said, F---, yeah."
Given that the two bands, who famously toured together in the original Lollapalooza almost 20 years ago, know each other so well, is there potential for some onstage collaboration? "That would be a great feat if we could accomplish it," says Farrell. "The ambition is to have a seamless evening of music."
Whether they can pull it off, Perkins is excited about touring with one of music's best live bands. "There is a competitive spirit of great musicians playing nightly and bringing the bar up," Perkins says. "I can't wait to see what comes out of it."
