Before Wednesday's encore at Bruce Springsteen's opening night of the 'Working on a Dream' tour in San Jose, California, the rocker acknowledged his rapid return to the road. "This has been a real quick turnaround for our band," Springsteen said. "I don't know that we've put out an album and tour this quickly since the '70s."Springsteen and the E Street Band began with the anthemic 'Badlands,' a song that closed the last tour, followed by the new album's opening track, 'Outlaw Pete.' While the band rocked through several new tunes, the energy was tempered by what Springsteen later referred to as "the toughest times we've seen in a century." He tackled the recession with 'Seeds,' in which Springsteen repeats, "It's all gone," and 'Johnny 99,' the tale of a man forced to steal because of "debts no honest man can pay."
Still, Springsteen fans were there to celebrate, and he didn't disappoint, with 'Working on a Dream' songs maintaining a major presence. Springsteen also pulled out the Golden Globe-winning title track to 'The Wrestler,' wherein he sings, "I always leave with less than I had before/Tell me, friend, can you ask for anything more?" When he finally finished, two hours and 41 minutes after the kick off, fans had one simple answer: No.
