Old 97'sInspired by Johnny Cash's 'Wreck of the Old '97'
Ken Bethea and Murry Hammond were desperate to come up with a group name "lest we be forever dubbed 'The Rhett Miller Band," Bethea once joked about their frontman. One idea was Up the Junction (from the Squeeze title) before being inspired by Johnny Cash's version of this country standard. Said Bethea, "Murry sold us on Old 97's by saying, 'Numbers are cool.'" What about Nazareth? They took their name from the beginning of the song "The Weight" by The Band. "I pulled into Nazareth, was feeling 'bout half past dead."

Seems to have missed out 'Stiff Little Fingers', named after the Vibrators single of the same name.
I know this cos Jake Burns told me!
P.S. wonder where the Vibrators got their name from?
