"I dread to think what he makes of us," Kooks frontman Luke Pritchard has said of David Bowie, who recorded the song on his album 'Hunky Dory.' "I doubt he's heard our music. He might have heard the name and thought, "Oh, that's a song I wrote."

This is the "official explaination" for the name of the band. Depending on who you ask...they actually took the name from the insulting name that people kept calling them while on stage.
