In a particularly poignant interview as part of Digg.com's 'Digg Dialogue' series, Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor pontificates (via user-submitted questions) about the current state of the music industry, the increasingly disparate riff between major labels and creatively-driven artists, new media and updated business models for modern artists.Nine Inch Nails offered their recent release 'The Slip' as a free download on their website but still sold enough limited-edition CDs to make it profitable. "It's not really up to me to give you free music, it's free anyway, for anybody that wants to admit it," Reznor tells Digg founder Kevin Rose.
Additionally, Reznor says that free music ends up being monetized when a new fan buys a concert ticket or band merchandise. Besides, he says (regarding the monetization of NIN.com), "It shouldn't always just be about making money."
In a more lighthearted moment in the interview, Reznor admits that the most embarrassing song on his iPod might be Ce Ce Peniston's 'Finally.' He explains that in the band's dressing room before shows they like to blast head-scratchers on the stereo to confuse the opening bands, security guards and other bystanders. But Peniston has grown on him: "I really like that song," he says. "It gets you going."
OK ... hope you didn't actually pay for that track, Trent.
