With an album title like 'To Lose My Life,' it seems only fitting that London trio White Lies have a gig coming up in a cemetery.Surrounded by the headstones of Hollywood legends, the British group -- frontman Harry McVeigh, bassist Charles Cave and drummer Jack Brown -- will perform at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery this week in the run up to their Coachella debut.
"It was a guy at our [label's idea]," Brown tells Spinner on a tour stop ahead of their Los Angeles visit. "They just wanted to do something slightly different, where we could go a little bit excessive in production if we wanted to and just see how far we could push it in a slightly different environment."
The band, who released their debut album last month, hit the ground running Stateside in March to support the release, which channels early Echo and the Bunnymen, and the Cure. Though they've nearly finished their trek across the U.S., Brown said they've managed to avoid becoming road-weary and are buzzing about the upcoming appearance.
"We wouldn't do a show like this anywhere else except Hollywood," he noted. "It's just the only place where that kind of theatrical side can really make sense. "
One gig that might be slightly different from their other shows is their upcoming Coachella festival date, the final stop on their current trek. For starters, the UK outfit might not be wearing their token black attire during their set in one of the California desert-based festival's tents.
"We don't really subscribe to [wearing dark clothes] fully now, anyway," Brown said. "It's more just about whatever suits the occasion." But though temperatures this weekend are expected just under 100 degrees, White Lies will keep their legs covered.
"I doubt we'd turn up in shorts because that would be offensive to everyone involved," Brown laughed. "Half the audience would turn around if they saw us in shorts."
