Nearly a decade after Civ's demise, the New York hardcore kingpins, named after frontman Anthony Civarelli, will get the box treatment with a 43-song, 2-CD collection. In addition, the band's mostly out-of-print discography will see a release on May 19."When we originally got together, it was more of a project -- a fun way to play music with [singer] Civ, play the hardcore that we grew up with, and also attempt to write some '60s inspired pop tunes," drummer Sam Siegler tells Spinner. "It was a fun from the start because we really didn't have any major expectations. We just wanted to do a series of EPs on our friend's record label, with cool artwork, and things kind of took off from there."
After the band parted ways in 2000, the members went on to start various bands, including Rival Schools, and Siegler provided the beats for bands such as Nightmare of You, Glassjaw, Head Automatica and even a bizarre stint in Limp Bizkit.
"Civ runs his own tattoo shop, travels a lot to tattoo shows, has a family," Siegler updates. "Charlie [Garriga] has a family as well, and is a partner in a bar/club in NYC. Arthur [Smilios] did the Gorilla Biscuits reunions with Civ recently, and was working at Civ's Tattoo shop for a bit."
But the real question: Is a reunion in the works? "I think we all agree that it would be a blast to play and support this release, but we're just trying to gauge what the demand will be," Siegler says. "It's hard to tell what places would make the most sense. We had a serious bond, spent a lot of time together, weathered some storms, made a lot of decisions. It was family -- it still is -- but the family isn't living in the same house. The whole thing was a blast."
