"It made me sick. It hardly makes it against Howlin' Wolf or Muddy Waters, does it?" --Keith Richards

In a recent interview, the Rolling Stones' guitarist admitted he used to despise his name, saying he even tried to re-brand himself as "Boy Blue" -- an attempt he called "pathetic."

Frank is correct, he was born Richards, and he did not change it legally, he just called himself Keith Richard

"Richards was born December 18, 1943, in Dartford, Kent, on the southern outskirts of London."

"After the death of Brian Jones in 1969, the Stones became a more straightforward, hard-rocking outfit, and Richards' guitar took center stage more than ever before. By this era, he'd taken to calling himself Keith Richard, simply because he thought it sounded better without the s."
*** from VH1 Biography.***
***Answer.com and Starplus.com*** say the EXACT same thing. hmm...
also..
"He was born Keith Richards on December 18, 1943, in Dartford, Kent, England, UK. His father, Bert Richards, a factory worker, was injured during the WWII."

I think Keith may despise his name because he had it legally changed. His birth name was Keith Richard. Everyone always mis-monikered him as Keith Richards (with an S). Since he was running into legal and contractual issues, he decide to change it to coincide with the public's common error. Little known truth? The change was a long time ago.
