Magnetic Fields Aren't Sentimental for '69 Love Songs' Anniversary

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Magnetic Fields' '69 Love Songs,' the triple-disc opus that made band architect Stephin Merritt an indie singer-songwriter stalwart. So far, Merritt is having a tough time revisiting the project. "We are doing a vinyl version, which is so long and complicated I now find myself in the position of having to proof the vinyl and the cover art at the same time," Merritt tells Spinner. Those of you who sensed a lack of nostalgia on this auteur's part, give yourself a hand. Asked if the anniversary and vinyl version, set for a June 9th release, might inspire him to perhaps play the entire album live (as the group did upon its release, over two nights), Merritt responded emphatically, "Hell, no. And thank heavens, no."
Younger fans, however, should not give up hope, as they do have a chance of seeing the lauded indie album done live. "I will revisit it perhaps for the 69th anniversary 59 years from now. Then I can imagine maybe performing it in its entirety," he says. "And then again perhaps for the 96th anniversary."
Cool, now we have something to look forward to in 2068.
