A few years ago, actress Mary Louise Parker appeared in the Jayhawks video for 'Save It for a Rainy Day,' in which she sports a yellow dress and does some, uh, interesting dancing. It's an experience she'd rather forget. "I'm good friends with Gary Louris, and it was so bad, no one ever saw it," Parker tells Spinner. "I'd just gotten pregnant. It's beyond embarrassing." But that experience didn't deter her from videos all together. Parker has recently popped up in 'Listen to the Darkside,' from Mississippi singer-songwriter Charlie Mars. The video shows Parker and Mars canoodling through New York, to the backdrop of Mars' crooning a narrative about getting high and listening to Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon.' The video was also directed by famed rock photographer Danny Clinch.
"Truthfully, I didn't know how he was going to make a video out of it," Parker says. "We didn't shoot for that long because I had to go to work that night. I was like, 'How the hell is he going to make a video out of that?' There just wasn't that much. But I really like it. And I love the song."
Getting an A-list star such as Parker to star in your music video might be a tough job, but not so for Mars. All he did was ask. "Someone took me to his show on a date or something," Parker recalls. "I met him that night and we talked for a couple minutes. Then he called the fella that I was with and asked him for my number. The day we were supposed to do [the video], I was really cranky. I was like, 'Oh, how could I get out of it?' I was really busy, and I was thinking, 'Should I say I broke my foot or something?' But then I got there and it was awesome. We had a great time."
At the suggestion that 'Listen to the Darkside' would make a nice addition to the 'Weeds' soundtrack, Parker could only agree with us. "I think it's kind of perfect. I wish it would. I hope people listen to it, because I like the record a whole lot."
Mars will be bringing the 'Darkside' to small clubs starting on June 9 in St. Louis, the day his album, 'Like a Bird, Like a Plane,' is released.
