David Crosby Is Proud of His 'Pudding'

As Crosby, Stills and Nash embark on an international tour, David Crosby is relaxing in his California home, preparing for the four-month trek when he speaks with Spinner. "I'm just laying back now but we'll shortly have to leave for Smell-A to rehearse," he tells Spinner. The legendary musician knows the best way to charge his batteries before a long stint on the road. "I spend a lot of time with my wife and my son Django, who just turned 14," he says. "I'm going to miss them a lot. I don't like being alone for that length of time in a series of hotel rooms, but I do like it that I've got a job I love."

Speaking of family, Crosby also recently spent a weekend with the children he fathered via a sperm donation with Melissa Etheridge and her ex-partner, Julie Cypher. "Bailey and Beckett are two extremely bright, very nice kids," he says of the children. Crosby also recalled the jokes his bandmates made after his famous donation, which earned him the nickname "the sperm whale." "The funniest was Neil Young coming up to me with a microphone and saying 'Uh, hi, I'm from Celebrity Sperm magazine.' He's such an a--hole. But yeah, they've razzed me about it but they've all met the kids and the proof is in the pudding. The kids are wonderful."

Speaking of Young, Crosby says fans shouldn't an expect an appearance by the occasional fourth member of their group. "That happens when he wants it to happen and god knows," he says. "I love making music with the guy. I have made some of the best music in my life with that cat but it's not something that you count on or predict."

On the road, much has changed from CSN's drug-fueled days of the '70s. "We go to dinners, museums and movies on the off nights," Crosby says. "I'm an inveterate bookstore wanderer. I read constantly, so I love a good bookstore. I can't help it. It's my one remaining vice." On top of that much healthier habit, Crosby also takes time on the road to stay in shape. "My son, James Raymond, plays piano in our band, and we spend a lot of time walking for my health," Crosby says. "I gave up bread, and I've lost a bunch of weight, which is very good because I'm diabetic. I'm older than I'd like and I'm creaky, but I'm doing alright."
