On Thursday, opening day of Bonnaroo 2009, the rain didn't necessarily get in the way of a good time, but it got in the way in other ways. Most notably, Delta Spirit had to cancel their 7PM CT show scheduled for That Tent when their flight to Nashville got canceled. Immediately following Passion Pit's headlining performance in This Tent, however, tent MC and radio personality Beetle Bob announced that Delta Spirit had, in fact, finally arrived and were about to make up their set pronto. Their set list included songs off of their debut album 'Ode to Sunshine,' a new tune from an album they've been recording this summer that had throwbacks to the their beginnings as punk rockers (in the band Noise Ratchet), and even a Louis Armstrong cover ('St. James Infirmary"), Delta Spirit took the stage with a mission, working off steam from a tough day of travel. Their mood and mindset actually matched the crowd as fans suffered through hours of standstill traffic and torrential downpours.
"Dallas is no place to stay in an airport," frontman Matthew Vasquez told the crowd. "Thanks for staying."
But the crowd was going nowhere to begin with...Thursday was just opening ceremonies for Bonnaroo, which runs until Sunday night. Let the games begin.
