Recently, we premiered singer-songwriter Jay Brannan's first single -- his take on the Cranberries' 'Zombie' -- from his forthcoming covers album, 'In Living Cover,' out July 7. Brannan is now offering an exclusive listen to the second single off of the record, his cover of the Verve Pipe's 90s hit, 'The Freshmen.'"'The Freshmen' is a song that was on the radio during my high school days," Brannan tells Spinner. "It's a beautiful and sad song that brings me back to a specific time and place, and conjures up specific memories and faces, both nostalgic and painful. I actually plucked out the notes on the piano to match the guitar part back in high school on the family piano, and have been singing it ever since."
Brannan will likely perform 'The Freshmen,' alongside other "new songs, old songs, cover songs [and] unpublished songs," on his upcoming tour, which kicks off July 8. "It's intimate and informal, sad and quiet, completely unfiltered, and with a healthy dose of humor to mask the pain," Brannan says of his live show.
