Take a look at the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart recently and rising above Rihanna, the Black-Eyed Peas and the Killers it's ... wait for it ... wait for it ...Yoko Ono. What's more, 'I'm Not Getting Enough' is actually Ono's third consecutive gold medal as far as the dance charts are concerned.Maybe being No. 1 is something she learned from her husband, the late John Lennon, but one hardly pictures Yoko Ono when thinking about clubbing. Lately, though, Ono has turned into something of an ambassador for the sport of dancing (and a proponent of club remixes). Ono tells Spinner that "dancing gets more blood in your brain than marching" and, she says, it is the best way to move through life.
Does that mean that Ono goes out from dusk 'til dawn on the weekends? Well, not exactly. "In my case, I'm a conceptual artist," Ono says. "It's really helping my life in the sense that the times when I really want to dance but I can't -- because I just can't go to a club by myself or something -- I think, 'OK, I'm just dancing in my mind.' So that's good."
As for music critics, who notoriously describe dance remixes with adjectives such as "mindless" and "manufactured," Ono theorizes that they're probably just bitter. "They can't dance, maybe," she says. "They should start dancing. And they'll see that it is not difficult and then maybe they'll become fans of it."
Hopefully, sure. As anyone who follows her tweets should know, Ono is still all about peace and love. But with a new EP from the Plastic Ono Band (entitled 'Don't Stop Me') available via iTunes, and a full CD slated for the fall, it seems like these days, all she is saying is get up and dance.
