Built to Spill frontman Doug Martsch is an avid basketball fan who spent the last year in L.A. making the band's forthcoming album, 'There Is No Enemy.' But he had no problem missing the Lakers' big win for the NBA title last Sunday night. "I'm a [Portland Trail] Blazers fan," he tells Spinner. "They beat my Blazers years ago and I can't really ever forgive them for that. There are some Lakers I like, but I'm definitely a Laker hater."Like most Laker haters, the biggest object of Martsch's scorn is #24, Kobe Bryant, to the point that as a fantasy player, Martsch doesn't want one of the league's best. "I wouldn't take Kobe. I wouldn't want to root for Kobe all season long," he says. "I think Kobe's amazing, but he's one of the worst people in the world."
In addition, Martsch, who plays in a fantasy league with members of Quasi and Stephen Malkmus, isn't going for Lebron James in the Kobe vs. Lebron debate that raged all season long. "I don't like Lebron either. I was psyched about Lebron when he entered the league and I knew that he was going to be the best basketball player ever, which I still think he's gonna be as far as the stats he puts up and stuff," Martsch says. "But he wore thin on me quickly as a human being. He's like Eddie Haskelll; he's saying all the right things in front of the camera. Off-camera, I think he's probably a prick."
