Phil Spector Is Behind Bars, Wants His iPod

Legendary producer and convicted murderer Phil Spector may be taking the Martha Stewart approach to jail-time. At least, in a way. Spector, age 69, has just begun to serve his 19 years to life sentence and, according to the Associated Press, he'd like to serve it with certain luxuries: specifically, the ability to listen to music, check email and watch his favorite shows.

Spector is being held in a single cell in a "sensitive-needs facility" area of his new home, the State Prison at Corcoran, Calif. As a medium-security inmate at California's largest prison, he is allowed to ask for certain creature comforts and, at the top of his list, are an iPod, a television and a computer. Prison officials have indicated that those wishes will likely be granted.

Spector was transferred to Corcoran after an evaluation at North Kern State Prison where, he claims, he was mistreated. His allegations are being investigated. This isn't the first time the Corcaran State Prison has seen a celebrity locked behind its chains: In 1999, Robert Downey Jr. served time there as the result of a probation violation. No word on what comforts Downey was granted, but, you know -- he got out.

This is prison not a resort or a hotel. He killed some one. Was tried and convicted. If he wants an iPod he sould go do prison laundry or work in the kitchen and earn his 35 cents an hour and save his money and by an iPod. As for a computer . hahahahahahahaha do "normal prisoners" have internet access?

I think you are totally on to something here. Build a studio...let him produce world class music- get it marketed, sell, sell sell and let the state collect all the money after expenses and have him 'earn' his keep. God knows Ca. could use the $ now a days! bp

I beg to differ with you Jeff....what state.... by chance..... are you talking about?
I worked for over 20 years in a Fla. prison which is a state facility....and there were a set list as to what the inmates were allowed to have....depending on the level of the facility. Inmates at the permanant camps (which are less restrictive) are not allowed to touch a computer nor permitted to enter into any area where one is located....sounds like someone has been listening to too many stories and lies being passed around.....

I dis agree, this murderer should get either life in prison with nothing to do, or get death penalty.

I agree, we pay for them to further their education and we pay for them the rest of their lives. This crazy dude should have to pay restitution to Lana's family. Sell his house and everything in it. That is part of the reason California is in the red. Put all the scum bag on a frickin island, fly over once a month and drop off water and vaseline. Save our money to pay me my social security that I have worked my entire life for.

I think it's a freakin outrage too! Why is he even at prison?! At prison you are supposed to pay your dues to society for your crimes, why should he be given these comforts? I think he's just being given these privilages (Yes, privilages) because he's a celebrity. This is constantly happening, and I think the courts should do something about it. Please reply to this and tell me what you think of this, thanks.

Other prisons do it? Where? I've been hearing for years about how prison inmates supposedly get all of these goodies, like a massage therapist, and a big screen TV (other than the one they share with 300 other guys). I sure never saw it at the medium security facility where I worked. Our inmates had to be able to fit all of their possessions, including clothing, bedding, toiletries, books, and anything else into a 2' x 2' x 3' box; they weren't allowed even medical services other than what was provided by the State -- not even second opinions -- and this certainly didn't include massage; and they weren't allowed their own computers or online connections of any sort -- even the Warden's office didn't have connections outside of the Department web, which was physically separate from the Internet. They were allowed a small tape player -- no record function -- and commercial audio tapes that came sealed from an approved vendor. So, if somebody actually has seen -- seen, not heard stories about -- some state prison where inmates get these wonderful things, please let me know.

Actually to anyone who's never seen prisons with these luxuries, just watch Lock Down... and other reality shows about prison. I've seen with my own eyes a computer in a lifers cell.

    It happens

IT IS AN OUTRAGE TO BE GIVEN ANY BETTER THINGS THEN INMATES THAT ARE POOR. THE POOR ONES BARELY HAVE TOILETRIES AND THE NESSETIES OF LIFE. IF YOU ARE PROVEN GUILTY YOU NEED NO LUXERIES IN PRISON. IT IS FOR PUNISHMENT IT IS NOT A VACATION RESORT. hE SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET THOSE THINGS.

Sure. We might as well put him on the pay role. Why not let him out 3 days a week to go get fast food and visit friends? What the heck is the world coming to? Are these criminals or are they guests at an institution? Get real people!!!

Oh please....This man should be treated like the common criminal that he is. Why should he get special privledges? OMG, I have a friend in jail right now and he can't even watch television when he wants. It's watched at a scheduled time, and a preselected station. Period. As for a computer. Crap,,,,with what they cost nowadays..give that money to someone who needs one, ya know like a low income family that has kids in school and could use a computer with internet access for school work. As for an IPod. if he wants to listen to music tell him to sing to himself. Did he give the woman he murder the choice to listen to music, computer access, check her email. NO!!!! He took that away now didn't he? Let him sit and think about the crime he committed and come to a private judgement.

I couldn't agree with you more Jeff. Our government is pathetic at best. Why in the hell would we allow something thats so ridiculous. The man or should I say Animal, committed a crime...its time for him to pay the price. He gave up his rights for those luxuries when he did what he did.Our society is weak and thats why other countries think were a joke.So to all of you bleeding heart liberals, wake the hell up!!!!!THIS IS A PRISON NOT A FREAKING DAYCARE....
