Vampire Weekend, Ra Ra Riot Members Launch Their Own Discovery

In 2005, even the hippest blogs weren't hip to Vampire Weekend or Ra Ra Riot yet. That's because neither band existed. But Rostam Batmanglij and Wesley Miles, who by the following year were in the beginning formations of those respective bands, had recorded some music together on synthesizers, just kicking around. That all got put by the wayside by the time the blogosphere did discover their separate bands but not shelved entirely. During those rare moments when both musicians had downtime, Rostam and Wesley were able to complete an album's worth of material, thereby transforming their tinkering into a certifiable side-project called Discovery.

"I want all the projects I do to have their own distinct goals and vibes," Rostam tells Spinner. "In Vampire Weekend, I want everything to be proportioned and ordered in a certain way, whereas with Discovery, I want things to get a little more out of control now and then. If there is another Discovery record, expect it to sound very different from this one."

That's great, but let's get through this one first. The album, entitled simply 'LP,' will be released on July 7, and features guest appearances by Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig and Dirty Projectors' Angel Deradoorian. The music sounds jittery and synthetic, with lots of handclaps, high-hats, high pitches and, you know, all the stuff the blogosphere would love to (pardon the pun) discover before you do. Or, um, at least write about it. Like so.
