Seeds Frontman Sky Saxon Dies in Austin

Sky Saxon, lead singer and bassist of '60s garage rockers the Seeds, died Thursday in an Austin, Texas hospital. He had been in the ICU since Monday suffering from an undisclosed illness -- doctors suspected an internal organ infection -- until his wife, Sabrina, announced his passing via Facebook.

Influenced heavily by the Rolling Stones, Saxon -- born Richard Marsh -- founded the Seeds in 1965 in California. The next year, the psychedelic rockers released two albums, 'The Seeds' and 'A Web of Sound,' and had hits with 'Can't Seem to Make You Mine' and 'Pushin' Too Hard,' their most successful song. In 1967, the band released two more albums: 'Future,' a psychedelic rock album, and 'A Full Spoon of Seedy Blues,' which was credited to the Sky Saxon Blues Band and featured liner notes by the legendary Muddy Waters.

After some lineup changes and a few more commercially unsuccessful albums, Saxon dissolved the band in the early '70s. He joined a California commune, the Source Family, adopted the name Sunlight and occasionally performed with their trippy house band, the Ya Ho Wa 13. In 1989, Saxon reformed the Seeds to tour with other '60s acts like Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Arthur Lee and Love. They toured again in 2003, and Saxon kept busy musically, releasing an album last year, and recording with the Smashing Pumpkins. Though he fell ill last Thursday, Saxon still managed to play a short gig on Saturday night at Austin rock club Antone's.

Earlier today, Sabrina Sherry Smith Saxon wrote on her Facebook page, "Sky has passed over and YaHoWha is waiting for him at the gate. He will soon be home with his Father. I'm so sorry I couldn't keep him here with us. More later. I'm sorry." No other announcements have been made.

I have difficulty describing the influence Sky had on me. And will continue to have on me.

In the few years I knew him he taught me a lifetime worth of lessons. Sky taught me to never give up. Sky showed me the way of forgiveness and true love for my fellow beings of all sorts.
Sky taught me patience. With his help he taught me how to make a great album (Pisces Rising was produced by him over the phone!).

The musical legacy he left us will continue to enrich our lives and the lives of those yet unborn for ages to come!

Right now I just want to reflect on the loss of my friend and teacher...Perhaps at a later time I will get into more detail, but more than likely I won't.
So many people were always trying to ride his cosmic and very long coat tails.
For me just having him as a friend and being blessed with having worked with him for a brief time is enough...If Sky taught me anything it was that with my heart in the right place and my mind unpolluted, I don't need to be anybody's side man. I can shine on my own.

So in closing I would like to say thank you Sky. Thank you for seeing something in me that I did not. Thank you for your influence and helping to shape my music. Thank you for your friendship. Thank you for your love.

I love you and I will miss you my friend...

I met Sky Saxon in the late 60's. I gave him a ride home to Topanga. He was sweet but a little strange, very, very loaded. He warned my friend and I not to kill the ants that were crawling all over his house. It was an experience, to say the least. Sad that he never left the 60's. A fun place to visit, but wouldn't want to live there. Sorry to hear of his passing.

SKY SUNLIGHT SAXON of the psychedelic garage rock legends THE SEEDS passed away at 9:10am Thursday, June 25th, 2009 at St David's South Austin Hospital in Austin, Texas. Sky died of heart & kidney failure, due to an undiagnosed infection of his internal organs. He passed peacefully with his wife Sabrina Smith Saxon & his spiritual brother in YaHoWha Joshua Aquarian by his side. He died, in his words, at the age of "eternal".

SKY SUNLIGHT SAXON, fell ill as early as Thursday, June 18th in his new home in Austin. Despite feeling under the weather Saturday, he performed a short set of SEEDS classics at the local night club Antone's with his local collective WORLD SPIRITS, his favourite local Austin band SHAPES HAVE FANGS. After continuing illness, he was rushed to St David's South Austin Hospital Monday morning & was immediately placed in ICU. He remained in critical condition in ICU until his passing several days later. Sky & his wife Sabrina recently moved to Austin, following his exciting headlining performance at the Austin Psych Fest #2 in March. Several tours were scheduled, including the East Coast/Mid-West tour in August with the California Revue, with members of LOVE & THE ELECTRIC PRUNES. The tour will still continue despite his absence.

Sky had many projects in the works that will undoubtedly still be completed & released in the coming months if not years due to his wealth of creative material left behind. One of which is a documentary about his legendary band THE SEEDS to be released next year in 2010. The documentary chronicles the band's activities with exclusive interviews with all original members, & rare never-before-seen footage of the band live & in session. The project is spear-headed by Alec Palao of Ace Records U.K. (The Zombies' box set "Zombie Heaven") -

"Part of the impetus for the SEEDS documentary is to correct a lot of the misperceptions about the band," explains documentary-maker ALEC PALAO, "and to properly state their role and achievements, and celebrate their music for what it is. The band were way ahead of their time, which I realize more and more as I go thru the nuts and bolts of their recordings. Due to various circumstances beyond the band's control, the original integrity of what the band was doing got lumped in with the worst commercial hype of the psychedelic scene as it expanded. Ultimately it means that the hipsters and tastemakers got turned off by the hype, and those prejudices have remained with all the commentators and writers ever since. So THE DOORS remain hip and leaders and THE SEEDS are seen as commercial hippies, followers, or not even an authentic part of the initial movement, which of course is dead wrong. I'm doing my part to correct that!"

Not to be a mean-spirited gossip, but I actually met Sky Saxon about two years ago when he was my GF's house-mate in a tiny little town in Northern California. He was the MOST burned out hippie I have ever met, literally stumbling around in a stupor, couldn't carry a conversation, ate mostly boiled vegetables and pasta cooked in one big pot. We all called him "Richard", but later learned he was really Sky Saxon, and he gave us a Seeds LP at one point. He had a bunch of really weird burn-out friends who would come over and apparently they had a Kabbala study group together. He was definitely in his '60s, could've been in his '70s from the looks of it, he looked like a very old man. I have more stories but maybe 'nuff said. :) I am not so much surprised to hear he passed, but it does blow my mind to imagine him getting his sh*t together enough to play with the Smashing Pumpkins last year!! Most of the time he was muttering to himself and cursing under his breath when we were around him, and that was back in '07...

Sky Saxon is my Brother. In YaHoWha . . . our Spiritual Father - who named him Arelich Aquarian.

Sky is a dear and gentle soul and the real thing. He did not speak ill of anyone - always had something positive to say of everyone - was always respectful of all and knew exactly who he was.

He will be remembered fondly by many and leaves a big hole in alternative rock and roll. The dogs of the earth have lost a great champion (spelled backwards = God).

On a light note, we - the Source Family - were living in Hawaii in 1975 and I had lined up a gig working in the muddy tropical rain forest. I asked for 10 of our brothers to help and Arelich (Sky) showed up in satins and patent leather shoes ! We shard a laugh about it for years.

Many who would be saddened by his final passage might be comforted to know that death is not the end. It is the beginning. Life and death are but the bookends of our lives. Arelich will have a smooth and easy passage as his soul reviews his life’s river for the next 3 1/2 days. The Source Family is arranging for 24/7 live chanting of the Sacred Name of God during his Rite of Passage. The Sacred Name is YA HO WHA . . . which has been known for thousands of years and hidden from the common man. Our Father came to teach through his music and that Name - saying that we need all the help we can get in our hour of need. Find more at YaHoWha.org.

Everything that happens - every circumstance and event - is for your own Soul's Growth. YaHoWha - 1973
