Death Cab for Cutie Think Jared Leto Should Stick to Acting

Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Nick Harmer think 30 Seconds to Mars' frontman Jared Leto should stick to acting. In a new interview, the DCFC members say Leto -- whose break came as Jordan Catalano on 'My So-Called Life' -- is putting on in his music.

"Not to throw anyone under the bus, but Jared Leto and his band 30 Seconds to Mars -- he's acting the part," Harmer tells the Big Takeover.

"He's a professional actor in music; so there's no way to feel any sincerity about his position as a musician," says frontman Gibbard, who, interestingly enough, is engaged to actress/musician Zooey Deschanel. "Because he makes a living playing characters -- so why wouldn't he be able to take a step forward? Then you're also acting what you think a rock star should act like."

"People embrace that and they put him on posters and they're a wildly popular band with some people," Harmer continues. "And they just look at that and think 'Oh, that's what rock stars do: they wear eyeliner.' I don't know, it's just a weird thing to me. I believe in the intangible quality thing. I think Jack White -- he's savvy as all get out with the media. But he also just has this magic around him. Conor Oberst is another one for me. They're able to kind of be one inside of the other."

Leto has yet to comment. We wonder, should Gibbard worry more about the retaliation from Leto or his bride-to-be?

Is this guy kidding? I admit Leto is an outstanding actor, but more importantly, an oustanding artist who's music proves this. Of course he's showing the "rock star" thing physically, that's his style, but he also can sing like a mother-f--ker with an outstanding voice. Artists don't have to channel their abilities towards one career, or in one direction. Artists can express themselves in many different ways, thus this is Jared Leto. Gibbard, open mouth insert foot - take a look at your fiance Zooey, HELLO !! Anybody in there?

Excellent. Because it's not like his fiancee, Ms. Deschanel isn't singing either. As a matter a fact she is, she has a band also and has a record coming out if it hasn't already. What an idiot.

I know! I'm an actress..so if I dance, does that make me an actress "acting" like I'm dancing? No. How stupid is this guy...30 Seconds to Mars ROCKS.

How rude! Didn't your mother teach you that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all? I believe you need to reevaluate the content of this article- since when can you only be one or the other?

The band 30 Seconds to Mars a successful one. They established themselves both in the USA and overseas- have you missed this somehow? They are working on their 3rd album and have the talents of Flood as producer behind them. You must have missed that also. To try and slam someone who is as hard working as Jared Leto says to me you have some insecurity issues that you need to work through. If you don't like someones music then leave it alone- to try and build yourself up by stepping on top of others justs makes you look rather small and ridiculous.

Oh and This is War......... Mars is coming.......

Did he just diss jared leto and 30stm???????? U must be oblivious to the fact that jared and his band members work so hard to accomplish what they do. Jared is and will always be an amazing actor and artist w/ a kick-ass band and voice.

Give it a rest. For openers, it doesn't matter if you work hard, if you suck, you suck. However, DCFC sucks too, so this clown ought to just stick to practicing.

I respect Ben Gibbard as an artist & enjoy his music, but these comments from him and bandmate Nick Harmer are extremely disappointing. It's totally their prerogative not to be fans of 30 Seconds to Mars' music or of frontman Jared Leto, but to suggest that it's all just an act is uncalled for & offensive, especially to 30STM's many many fans.

I invite Ben Gibbard and all of DCFC to check out some of the amazing music videos and live videos of the band on youtube. Clearly he's never seen any of 30STM's stellar acoustic performances or brilliantly directed music videos.

Jared Leto is a true artist; he labors over the music; he is one of the hardest working musicians out there. And he appreciates & includes his fans more than any artist I've ever seen. It's a mutual love & admiration society in the Mars camp.

DCFC should check it out & experience it before making silly & unfounded judgments.

You know what they say about opinions - everyone has one. But this sort of negativity and nastiness is unwarranted and pointless. Did 30 Seconds to Mars refuse to tour with DCFC, or is this just pure and simple jealousy?

Regardless, anyone who's actually seen 30 Seconds to Mars live would NEVER accuse Jared Leto of 'mailing in' a performance. The entire band gives their ALL - even when they're sick! They give so much every time they play that to see someone saying this is just beyond ridiculous.

To top it off, as has been said repeatedly, this moron is engaged to an actress who is trying to be a musician. He might want to look forward to sleeping on the couch for a while. Another point is that Jared was a musician BEFORE he was an actor, as was his older brother Shannon, so maybe instead he should just stick to his original career, MUSIC? But to make it sound as though creativity can only be expressed through one outlet is narrow-minded and just plain stupid.

Get a clue, Death Cab for Cutie members. You're definitely NOT anything remotely cute.

Is this guy on something? Seriously, Jared Leto would have to be a pretty good actor to be able to pull off the success that he has had with his band 30 seconds to mars. You can't "act" the brilliant music he writes. I admit, it's amazing and unbelievable how Jared Leto is such a great and successful actor AND musician but that's no reason to go ahead and say he's faking it. Just because YOU can't multi task nick that's no reason to go dissing people who can...

This is just laughable!! HAHAHAHA!!! I think what we have here is a severe case of what is called an "Inferiority Complex". You Sirs (Ben Gibbard and Nick Hammer)are the prime example of what it is to be unprofessional, tactless, and just plain pitiful. Jared Leto has more talent in his little toe than you guys have between the both of you. Such a disgusting display of jealousy. By the way, who the hell is Death Cab For Cutie? Oh! I'm pretty sure Jared Leto appreciates the shout out. Dumb asses!!! HAHAHAHA!!!!!

    Are you kidding me?
How much ruder can someone get?! I mean, just because Jared was an actor first and a singer second means nothing! He is one of the ONLY actors who have sucessfully made the transition...

AND HE DOESN'T USE HIS FAME FROM ACTING TO GAIN POPULARITY/GIGS!!! He and the others REFUSE to play anywhere that use his name to promote!!
    How is that for awesome?!
    Very!

And there is no way I associate eyeliner with rock music! It's an individual decision that he and the others--along with many other bands--decide to do!

Honestly, 30 Seconds to Mars' music is easier for me to connect to than any DCFC!!
And there is no way in hell that you can "act" that kind of talent. Not only in his voice/lyrics, but the other TWO PEOPLE IN THE BAND!!

Keep that in mind, DCFC! Tomo and Shannon are a part of the band, two. They aren't leeching off this apparent "acting" that Jared seems to be "using".

...I agree with Shannonz30... you have an INFERIORITY COMPLEX that needs to be dealt with--WITH HIGH DOSES OF 30 Seconds to Mars.

Thank you for inadvertantly promoting 30 Seconds to Mars and Jared Leto.
    Have a nice day, DCFC.

    P.S.--

Ok REALLY???? Is this what it comes to??? Jealousy and Insecurity??? Jared/ Shannon and Tomo and previous members of this band have worked their asses off for their music!!! If it was all an act then they wouldn't really have had to work so hard!! We have all seen actors turn into instant stars in music, without so much as a BLINK of an eye! But 30 Seconds to Mars has worked hard to build a Cult following, and to me and I am sure alot of their fans this is way more important than corporate popularity!! They are loyal and good to their fans, and incredible musicians, which is why their fans are loyal to them with a passion!!! In short this does not make Death Cab for Cutie look very intellegent!!! It makes you look smaller than your actual following!!!!

Awwww its ok dcfc, it must be hard knowing that 30 Seconds To Mars are more talented and more successful than you.
But you didn't have to go and make complete douche bags of yourselves!!
Jared, Tomo and Shannon all put 100% into their music, and it pays off!! you can't act that pure, raw emotion that they put into every one of their songs.

Trust me, they'll be around a lot longer than you, win more awards than you and have more loyal fans than you..
