Death Cab for Cutie Think Jared Leto Should Stick to Acting

Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Nick Harmer think 30 Seconds to Mars' frontman Jared Leto should stick to acting. In a new interview, the DCFC members say Leto -- whose break came as Jordan Catalano on 'My So-Called Life' -- is putting on in his music."Not to throw anyone under the bus, but Jared Leto and his band 30 Seconds to Mars -- he's acting the part," Harmer tells the Big Takeover.
"He's a professional actor in music; so there's no way to feel any sincerity about his position as a musician," says frontman Gibbard, who, interestingly enough, is engaged to actress/musician Zooey Deschanel. "Because he makes a living playing characters -- so why wouldn't he be able to take a step forward? Then you're also acting what you think a rock star should act like."
"People embrace that and they put him on posters and they're a wildly popular band with some people," Harmer continues. "And they just look at that and think 'Oh, that's what rock stars do: they wear eyeliner.' I don't know, it's just a weird thing to me. I believe in the intangible quality thing. I think Jack White -- he's savvy as all get out with the media. But he also just has this magic around him. Conor Oberst is another one for me. They're able to kind of be one inside of the other."
Leto has yet to comment. We wonder, should Gibbard worry more about the retaliation from Leto or his bride-to-be?

He is entitled to his own opinion. people need to calm down seriously. if you know jared leto is such a good musician then why do you need to argue with someone about it? I love 30 seconds to mars and death cab for cutie they are both very talented bands. if you don't agree with his opinion then just ignore it. I don't agree with Ben but he is allowed to express what he thinks just like anybody else is.

I think that guy has it all wrong about Jared Leto because before Leto's acting career, he was doing some music with his brother, Shannon. So I think this dude should STFU if he doesn't know shit about someone who's better than him. That guy can't even go up to his level nor compare to Jared, because Jared is musical genious, who takes his work seriously.

All rock muscians are actors! They all preen and dance and act outrageous on stage! Musicianship is an extension of acting! Jared Leto, Shannon Leto & Tomo Milicevic are the real deal! Thirty Seconds to Mars is the real deal and God knows their music is more invigorating and inspiration than Death Cab for Cutie's is.

FYI, People are entitled to their own opinions. For example, I do not hold it against you for liking whiney manufactured crap. Also, he never said that actors could not be good musicians; He merely stated that this one is not.

Interesting. Leto is a better actor than I thought. That he can successfully ACT the part of a composer, and act like he can sing so convincingly is a feat that is nothing short of epic. So that music must come from... magic? His voice is from a can?
Boy is fooling himself. Musicians are entertainers, just like actors. They do what pleases the crowd as much as they do what pleases themselves. If you attain any sort of fame, you sold out on the musician only angle. You aren't JUST doing what you like. You're catering to the masses. Which may call for something like... acting, perhaps?
Musicians that try to be actors, acting out the 'cool image' of the esoterically enhanced suffering geniuses generally come off looking like weenies. In my opinion.

people need to realize: A musician is entitled to his/her opinion. i personally feel that he was right in putting his opinion in seeing the musician behind the art. you want to defend 30stm...well, thats you. if you met them, then you know what i'm talking about. nuff said.
maybe people need to stop talking about oh...he is so great and really see a musician beyond the art. see the person they are when no one is looking.
i wish 30stm more growth through their music since they are now into their 3rd album. its interesting what #3 can do for a band.
try not to see Leto for My So-Called Life. dude could read and that shit was 10 years ago!
