Eric De La Cruz, the 27-year-old whose need for a heart transplant inspired Trent Reznor to raise over $800,000, died Saturday, July 4th from his condition, severe dilated cardiomyopathy. The Nine Inch Nails fan was never able to regain his health to get the transplant. The campaign to save De La Cruz was started after his sister, Veronica, a former CNN anchor, made pleas via the media and her Twitter account for help. Eric's need for a new heart was denied by Nevada Medicaid and private insurance companies, so it appeared his only hopes were to either get on Federal Medicare, which initially denied his request, or to pay for the highly expensive procedure out of pocket.
Veronica's quest for donations eventually caught the eye of Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, who took to his Twitter feed to encourage fans to help out. He then offered backstage passes and other rewards via the Nine Inch Nails official Website, which brought in over $850,000.
Unfortunately, despite the money and being approved for Medicare, the transplant never happened due to Eric's continued declining health. In a letter addressed to "Eric's Twitter Army," Veronica wrote, "It is with the heaviest heart that I write this, my beautiful and beloved little brother Eric De La Cruz has passed away. He died yesterday, July 4, 2009, sometime between 2:20 pm and 2:35 pm. Both my mother and I have been so overcome with grief and sadness, we couldn't bear to put the message out, so until now we shared it with only Eric's closest friends and relatives." Funeral arrangements are still pending and Veronica pledges to continue working on his behalf and spreading awareness of others in need of transplants.

Even though medicate is slow moving having every one on governmental health care will just make it slower like in many other countries. Sorry for the loss of your brother and son.

This is not about politics. Get over your own personal ego and acknowledge that someone has died tragically.

This is really messed up! The Goverment claims another victim! This sux cause if Eric was some kid who lived in the hills or something he would have gotten the treatment he needed! This sux cause in this country your health depends on how deep you wallet is! Kudos to Trent Reznor who used his popularity among the masses to help Eric! And to the Cruz family nothing i could say could heal your wounds I just hope you'd be content with the fact that he's not suffering anymore! He's in heaven rocking out with God! Don't feel saddened cause one day you'll get to see him again!

Sadly Joe you are correct. But it wasn't just NV Medicaid as the article said that private insurers also refused to cover the transplant. Federal Medicare is ususally at least a two year process. Once you apply you are sure to be denied the first time. Then by the time you go through the appeal process it takes a couple of years. If anyone in this country thinks that a government run health care system is the answer then they are in for some shocking discoveries when they or their loved ones get seriously ill. People will die, many, many people just like this young man WILL DIE. Not just the elderly who will most certianly will die but the young too.

Medicaid was not to blame. NIN raised the money but Eric never got healthy enough for the surgery to take place.

Even though it is wrong for medicaid to take such a long time when time is so important the insurance companies are no different. Did you all not read about the young girl, not yet 18, who needed a transplant or drug that the insurance company decided she didn't need. After a long drawn out battle of the parents fighting to make them pay they agreed to pay the morning the girl passed away. So sad and unlike medicaid these insurance companies are being paid very good premiums, they are aren't free. Cigna health care were her providers, I had them at the time and would have loved to be able to discontinue my insurance based on ethics but with kids there is no way I could afford another insurance.

Just wait till medicaid covers all of us, what are we sheep, they make all the decisions, in the name of
1. security
2. health care
3. fairness/equality/justice
4. one guy did it so all you bastards have to suffer
I do know folks, its getting scary to be in the US or even on this planet.

Sorry, Jeff, but it IS about politics and money. The pharmaceutical companies and the insurance companies donate outrageous amounts to political camapaigns - do your research, my friend. Rent the dvd, 'Sicko' - you'll be shocked at what is going on in our government. My mother passed last week from cancer - people in France and Canada don't have to pay for cancer care. We are dying at ALARMING rates from cancer in this country - ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !!!!!
tigerlily468at 7-08-2009
Jeff, it IS about politics, someone died BECAUSE of politics.
Joe The Ghoul is correct.
ladymraven72at 7-08-2009
Well, united healthcare is not FREE!! Everything has a price and who do you think is going to pay for the nurses and doctors? The goverment is tapped and I personally want to decide what type of doctor I see. With universal healthcare you get who you get with no say so...Think long and hard if you really want this type of healthcare.
marthastilat 7-08-2009
If you think we control our health care you're crazy. ?The insurance companies control it and it's all about their making money for the CEO and share holders.
janicecbwat 7-08-2009
Did you fail to note that private insurance also refused him care ? At least you can VOTE for Congress. What do you plan to do to private insurance companies that wanted to have drive-thru breast removal in cancer cases ?
blakecallahanat 7-08-2009
if he had federal insurance from the beginning like medicare it would have paid before he got too ill. it is the local (state) medicaid that can take so long and be very difficult to get. I had applicants denied that had already passed away and it was the state aid that declined them.
dbhatiamdat 7-08-2009
Unfortunately, it IS about politics. Hats off to NIN and TR. Medicare is only the tip of the iceberg. Wait til "Obamacare" comes. A transplant is the only option for Dilated Cardiomyopathy, outside of some medications. However, it must be done in a timely fashion. If patients get too sick, they can not tolerate the procedure.
Monikaat 7-08-2009
it is very tragic that this man passed away.
in response to it being the fault of medicaid, just wait until we are totally socialist and all people get government health care. It will take so long to get an appointment, you may never even know what is wrong with you until it is too late. I think private insurance is a good thing in a non-socialist country, like the USA. But we are quickly moving to be a socialist country, and it is sad.
