The term "B-sides" can imply a certain silver medal status of songwriting, but that's definitely not always the case. For example, West Indian Girl just released 'We Believe,' a collection of B-sides, remixes, and rarities that is definitely not a package of throwaways, or anything of the sort. "The reason these are b-sides is simply because they didn't make the first record," bassist Francis Ten tells Spinner. And not because they weren't good enough -- they were simply victims of sequencing and space. 'We Believe' also includes unreleased remixes and a super off-the-wall cover of the Beatles' '8 Days a Week' that is worth checking out. A free download of one of the tracks (as well as a full-album stream) is available at West Indian Girl's website.
"I'm really glad these songs get to see the light of day," says Ten. "It's sort of like finding out you have a teenage child living in Florida and finally getting to meet them ... Wait, that would be a different feeling." Okay, that's not creepy.
