Though Portland folk rockers Blitzen Trapper just premiered their creepy video for 'Black River Killer' last week, the track itself is by no means new or, for that matter, based on fact. "The song is very much a parable or something like a fable," frontman Eric Earley tells Spinner. "I don't think there's any kind of obvious connection to reality. I think it hits upon certain ideas of the American West and submerged violence in America and the way that we deal with it." Technically, the song comes from the band's 2008 album 'Furr' but it's about to be the star of its very own EP. To be released later this summer by Sub Pop, the 'Black River Killer' EP will also include six songs that the band has been performing live but that were previously only available in homespun CDR's at their merchandise table.
"The songs were recorded between 'Wild Mountain Nation' and 'Furr' and they didn't go on the record just because there were too many songs," says Earley. "But it is definitely connected to 'Furr.' It's not a new thing -- it's from the 'Furr' sessions."
And that's good news. For fans of 'Furr,' anyway.
