The Raveonettes Will Lighten Up on New Album ... Sort Of

"I was here once a long time ago watching the Yeah Yeah Yeahs," Sharin Foo of the Raveonettes tells Spinner backstage at the ninth annual Siren Festival. "It's good to be here. We haven't played in a long time ... we're just happy we're out!" She and bandmate Sune Rose Wagner, who "doesn't approve" of the Brooklyn seaside destination's infamous freak show, have been holed up for the past two months recording their much-anticipated new album, 'In and Out of Control,' which Foo calls "extraordinary ... the ultimate light album."

This, of course, throws us for a loop. The Danish duo's last album, appropriately titled 'Lust Lust Lust,' was, as Foo puts it, "the ultimate dark Raveonettes album," the entire work laced with a relentless "monotonous drone" and intent on exposing the danger and power of human wanting. This time around, they're focused on storytelling through a slightly sunnier musical lens.

But don't let the music fool you. "The lyrics are probably the most harsh we've ever written," Wagner warns with a grin. "There's some evil stuff on there. There are issues about drugs and suicide and relationships and love ... stuff that you may find annoying." Ah, there are the Raveonettes we know and love.

You can preview songs from 'In and Out of Control' here. It's due in stores October 6.
