Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein Survives a Phish Diet

Ever since Phish reunited this year after a five-year separation, they've been nothing but active. They dove right back into touring with two sold-out summer treks and headlined two nights of the largest festival in America, Bonnaroo. Their new album, 'Joy,' is set for a September release and during that same month, guitarist Trey Anastasio will partner with the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall while bassist Mike Gordon will embark on a 21-date solo tour. Oh, and the band just announced a festival on Halloween weekend, at the same venue that usually hosts Coachella in Indio, CA.

Unlike Coachella, Phish's "Festival 8" will focus on just one band for three days and eight sets. Before you make some wisecrack about how that's barely enough time for one single Phish jam, consider this: for one of their sets, Phish will reprise their Halloween tradition of covering another band's album in its entirety as their "musical costume."

Nobody knows what band they'll "dress up" as yet, but it's a safe bet that it won't be Sleater-Kinney. No matter. Sleater-Kinney's guitarist, Carrie Brownstein, recently admitted on her NPR blog Monitor Mix that she always hated on Phish but, strangely, never actually gave them a chance. All this new activity and media attention caused her to reconsider. In a publicly documented experiment, Brownstein recently attempted to become one of Phish's faithful followers by immersing herself in the band's music and culture for an entire week. During that time she listened to nothing else. The result? She "now owns more Phish than anything else" but, at the end of the day, she's a punk-rock girl at heart.
