    Jill Sobule Attacks Katy Perry

Singer-songwriter Jill Sobule recently made headlines by having fans fund her record, but she's refrained from commenting on the fact that pop star Katy Perry copped her 'I Kissed A Girl' song title. When Spinner spoke to Sobule back in February, she was mum on the subject. Until now.

In an interview with the Rumpus, Sobule spoke frankly about her thoughts on the song, citing specifically that while Perry claims she came up with it in a dream, that it was actually conceived of by a crack team of professional writers. And that Perry was signed by the same guy that signed Sobule in 1995.

"When Katy Perry's version came out I started getting tons of inquiries about what I thought," Sobule said. "Some folks (and protective friends) were angry, and wondered why she took my title and made it into this kind of 'Girls Gone Wild' thing. Others, including my mother, were excited because they thought I would somehow make some money out of it. Unfortunately you can't copyright a title ... bummer."

But Sobule sets the record straight in a rare unfiltered moment, speaking honestly about her feelings regarding what went down. After all, Perry is now flooded with fame and fortune while Sobule's career dictates that she needs to find new, interesting ways to forge her career path. "If I really think about it, there were a few jealous and pissed off moments," she said. "So here goes, for the first time in an interview: f--- you Katy Perry, you f---ing stupid, maybe 'not good for the gays,' title thieving, haven't heard much else, so not quite sure if you're talented, f---ing little slut. God that felt good."

    We bet it did, Jill.

That was kind of immature and pety if you ask me. People need to take responsbility for their own lives, and not put the blame on others. It's a title. And there is a reason why you can't copyright titles. Because its just a title. Now had she stole the lyrics to an entire song of yours then yes that would be wrong. Get a grip.

That's it? She's pissed because of a TITLE? Is this a joke? Get a life you uncreative hack. It's not like "I Kissed A Girl" is at all original and unique.

That is what I had to say to myself after reading this useless article. This is a waste of internet space and readers time. Grow a real back bone, show support for women artist, and stop griping about every little detail. If she was really working on some music she would not have time to worry about things like this.

Katy Perry's a flash in the pan, and Jill Sobule's the real deal. We'll see where things are in about five years.

Right, because "Real Deals" need to have their albums paid for by the fans as opposed to record companies.

actually Steven, recording artists can choose whether to have there albums funded through the record company (keep in mind she is signed) or if they want to fund it themselves. This is really a unique way to test the strength of your fan base. If they like you enough to pay for you to record your next album then you know you are set for the album after that. If they wouldn't be willing to do that then your career is over.

OH GOSH SHE STOLE A SONG TITLE. THAT B----. please it's not like she totally copied the whole song. maybe instead of bashing other artist to get publicity, maybe you should come up with some good songs. it was really just unnessecary and rude. and the title "i I Kissed a Girl" isn't the most creative either, there's probably 10 more out there. you make me sick.

Right....so if a record company funds your record that makes you talented? Wrong. They fund what the sheep-masses will buy, it's not based on talent whatsoever - it's based on market forces and the commercial viability of the artist ie; package it for the moronic masses to lap up. Most successful 'artists' today can barely string a coherent sentence together never mind pen a decent song (that's if they can write songs at all, rather than have someone else write it for them). Having a good voice is NOT a talent. Millions of people can sing well, doesn't make them talented and hardly what I'd call musical genius. Would you buy a CD by a fat, not-so-good-looking person but who csn sing like an angel? No, thought not. You're buying into the image, the music is secondary to you. But you go right ahead and be a good little sheep consumer and just buy what you're programmed by the media to buy. I'll continue to seek out real talent - and that certainly ain't found in the top 40.

    Yeah... i Say itat 8-04-2009

Yeah... I agree with what you are saying. Yet, you are reading this arcticle and replying to it... Why? Because you too are influenced by the media... Don't write and preach about what is and isn't good music- i buy music both because I like it and I like the person(s) who sings it. It doesn't matter if they are marketed or not.. In your quest for better music and talent, once you have "discovered" them (group or singer)... soon every one will catch up and begin to listen to them. They (group or singer) will get signed by a big record company and become huge... and more and more people will buy the music, putting them in the top 20... So after they have made top 20 you will stop listen and buying there music because the "moronic masses"- as you said- are buying them? Do not sit and write, preaching about the music and entertainment business- assuming that every one is the same. I bet you have a CD or song from one of these TOP 40 artist. Right? Yup, thought so. My point is: Don't generalize about everyone or every thing... there are exceptions to the rules. There are plenty of people in the TOP 40 who in fact write their own songs.

You agree with what I'm saying...then proceed to disagree. So which is? You seem a bit confused. Do I have an album by an artist in the top 40? No. I do listen to the charts on the radio, but nothing interests me. It all sounds rather bland, over-produced and rarely challenging. Everyone is exposed to the media, yes - but everyone influenced by it? No. For instance, everyone's assuming that this article about Jill is 100% true. What if she's being misquoted or the comments are being used out of context? Who knows? Yes, I'm a cynic and I have no doubt that Jill has done this to drum up some free publicity for herself. That's my cynicism at work again. I do not believe everything I read, see or hear - all media has a bias, you either choose to see it or you don't. I buy music I like too - and if something hit the charts I liked, I'd buy it. But this hasn't happened in quite some time. My point being, from my original post, music is a whole package now - image, attitude, music etc. It's not even about the music anymore, really. It's about how to package and sell an image. Don't you think that the people with the least talent are the ones who will work hardest to become a celebrity? I certainly do.

'Yeah...I say it' (what an odd name?) - you start off by saying you agree with me...then proceed to completely disagree with me. So which is it? You seem a bit confused. Do I own any CDs by artists in the top 40? No. So straight away your argument goes out the window! Influenced by media? No. Exposed to the media, yes - but not necessarily influenced by it. I'm too cynical and suspicious to be influenced by anything I read, see or hear. In fact, my cynicism makes me wonder if Jill's comments have either been fabricated or misquoted. Everyone could be damning Jill when it might not even be true. But such are the gullible masses. And yes, they are gullible. There, I said it too.
