Tiga, Crystal Castles Rave Through Osheaga Thunderstorms
- Posted on Aug 3rd 2009 10:00AM by Simona Rabinovitch
Crowd surfing took on a whole new meaning at Day 2 of Osheaga as Crystal Castles' frontwoman Alice Glass found herself held aloft by the rain-soaked, screaming crowd for part of the duo's brief but electric performance.
The Toronto electro band's performance at the Montreal Éléctronique Groove stage began late because Glass and bandmate Ethan Kath had to drive in from Ottawa after their flight was delayed due to bad weather.
Indeed, pounding thunderstorms continued off and on throughout the day and evening, dousing die-hard audiences who came out in droves to cheer on bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (bumped up to headliners after the Beastie Boys unexpectedly cancelled two weeks ago following Adam Yauch's cancer diagnosis), hometown hero Rufus Wainwright and Montreal up-and-comers Hollerado.
While shows went on as planned, the dramatic weather provided some unexpected flavour and plenty of muddy terrain.
As the sun set, Montreal's own superstar DJ Tiga kept a field of drenched, dancing fans warm with a bleepy, growling techno set that included hits from his new artist album, 'Ciao!' Somehow, a crew of happily bopping kids managed to get on stage where they boogied up a storm, amping the rained-on crowd to get their rave on even more.
