Daryl Hall and John Oates Releasing Four-Disc Box Set
- Posted on Aug 19th 2009 2:00PM by Dan Reilly
Hitmaking duo Daryl Hall and John Oates announced Wednesday that they will release a four-CD box set that spans their remarkable 43-year career. Entitled 'Do What You Want, Be What You Are: The Music of Daryl Hall and John Oates,' the retrospective shows how they went from Philadelphia teens to the biggest selling duo of all time."This box set will be a treasure for the die hard Daryl Hall and John Oates fan and a creative surprise to the casual fan," Oates tells Spinner. " All the hits are there but the real gems are the unreleased tracks and live performances that showcase the true depth of our life's work as professional songwriters, producers and artists."
On top of their six No. 1 singles -- such as 'Rich Girl,' 'Private Eyes' and 'Out of Touch,' and their 10 Top 10 tracks, 'including 'You Make My Dreams,' 'She's Gone' and 'Everything Your Heart Desires' -- the 74-song collection includes 16 previously unreleased recordings. Of the 10 live tracks, five are from their first show in England while the most recent, a cover of the Mad Lads' 'I Want Someone,' comes from Hall's Internet series, 'Live From Daryl's House.' The six remaining studio tracks include outtakes, a remix of 'Gino (the Manager)' and a new recording of a lost 1972 demo, 'Dreamer.'
In addition, the liner notes for each song will be included in a 60-page booklet that also features never-before-seen photographs and a brand new band biography. Throughout the book, there are also testimonials about the duo and their music by notable musicians such as Mick Jagger, Carly Simon, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard, Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump and many more.
The set will be released Oct. 6, just before the duo plays one of the final shows at the Philadelphia Spectrum Oct. 23.

Does anyone know if the version of "Your Imagination" on the box set is the single version or the one from the album. They were different mixes...the single version is a lot better. I'd buy the box set for this one record if I knew it was the single version, but I can't find that info on the internet. Please let me know if you know.

Ooh I'll definitely be getting it and I've marked it on my calender! I'll be seeing Daryl & John on Sept. 4th;) I'm so excited and counting down the days!!!
August 22 2009 at 6:01 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI am very excited for this, but I have to agree with Moe about the other albums not represented. I honestly feel Marigold Sky was one of their best. Truly love them anyway. Can't wait til I can blast Lilly!!
August 21 2009 at 10:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe LA show at the Nokia is going to be great! A nice precursor to the release of this 4 CD set! Especially the mix from the show at the Apollo with David Ruffin & Eddie Kendrick -- have the album, but this will be special! Can't wait to see them on September 2nd! Deb
August 21 2009 at 11:44 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWow, I wonder if we can pre-order this at the H&O website? This is going to be great, and I'm so glad they included a cut from Live At Daryl's House! That show is awesome! I personally think it's one of the best things on the internet right now, musically speaking. Daryl has always been an innovator, no surprise there.
August 21 2009 at 11:39 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAfter 13 years of waiting, I'll be buying the box set. There's still slight disappointment in that apparently 4 albums are not represented:
1977's "Beauty on a Back Street"- The one they hate
1997's "Marigold Sky"
2004's "Out Kind of Soul"- their covers album
2006's "Home for Christmas"- their holiday album
I'm sure there's valid reasons for those getting excluded.
