Girl Talk Rocks Out After Stage Collapse

The first time the music stopped during the Girl Talk show at Brooklyn, N.Y.'s East River Park, it was because of a rogue piece of plastic. "That was my backstage pass hitting the spacebar," Gregg Gillis explained to the crowd after an extended moment of silence interrupted his outdoor DJ set. The second time was for a reason that was far more dramatic -- "We broke the stage," the musician informed the spectators.Apparently a mass of dancing hipsters caused the platform in front of the Manhattan skyline to cave in during Girl Talk's Sunday afternoon show, which included opening numbers by British eccentric Max Tundra and emerging hip-hop prodigy Wiz Khalifa. It wasn't too surprising, considering Gregg hit the stage running (technical difficulties aside). The artist kicked off the JellyNYC Pool Party concert by instructing the New York crowd to put two hands in the air. "Let's make some noise," he announced, and the audience was more than willing to oblige.
The entire outdoor performance was a picture of controlled chaos, with Girl Talk standing in the center of a sea of toilet paper, confetti and beach balls. The scruffy Pittsburgh native, who bounced around the stage in a white t-shirt and sweatband, mixed everything from Beyonce to Black Sabbath and Eve to Elton John during his rambunctious set. Although there was sporadic rain throughout the show, the crowd refused to stop dancing whether it was on the collapsing stage or on the muddy ground. By the end of the performance, the venue's security officers took up most of the podium. But ultimately, it was the unruly pack of dancing fans that got the concert going then shut it down.
