Montreal DJ Grandtheft Makes Drake's 'Best' Even Better

Toronto-based rising hip-hop star Drake might have 2009's song of the summer with his breakthrough single 'Best I Ever Had.' But despite its popularity, the laid back track lacks the uptempo oomph required to similarly dominate the clubs (Not that Drake would be dancing to it anyway, since he's still waiting on knee surgery).

But that minor problem has now been solved with an official remix by Team Canada's party-rocking DJ Grandtheft, who turns the original's "relaxed soul loop" into a full-on, electro-fuelled banger.

"The original is a great pop song [but] very chill," Grandtheft tells Spinner. "I tried to make a remix that I wanted to DJ in the club this weekend."

Though this is their first collaboration, it's been a long time coming since both Drake and Grandtheft have known each other for a while from moving in similar music circles. "Before 'Degrassi' was syndicated in the US, I tried to help break his first big song 'City Is Mine' in Toronto," Grandtheft recalls. "He came out to a few Team Canada parties and I spoke with him online about collaborating. We started touring 200 days a year as he became a mega TV/rap star as his show got big in the US and he signed with Lil Wayne's management, so a collab never happened. Then I ran into his DJ in Toronto a few weeks ago and he suggested I remix 'Best I Ever Had' for them."

Grandtheft is better known for remixing indie-dance acts like the Juan Maclean, Chromeo, Santigold and Lykke Li, but that turned out to be a perfect fit. After all, Drizzy has always had indie sensibilities -- he covered both Li's 'Little Bit' and Santi's 'Unstoppable' on his 'So Far Gone' mixtape.

"Drake obviously gets a lot more urban and pop love than he does in the indie scene. But all types of girls seem to like him," laughs Grandtheft. "Hopefully my remix gets him more spins in the indie dances though."
