Players for the University of Southern California football team recently attended a team meeting where two special speakers informed them about a new type of fungus spreading across the country in locker rooms. Unbeknownst to the athletes, one of those speakers was singer-songwriter Bill Withers. "It's a problem with a fungus that we haven't seen in a long time," said Withers in a serious tone. "It's the only fungus we know that has ever been associated with bone damage." He then brought up a young woman who said, "We're working on a prototype shoe that comes up to the knee. I know it's corny, but you guys are a team and you'll be able to get into it together."
Moments later, Withers reveals that they had indeed been punked, but he still had yet to identify himself. The whole thing came about after he saw a recent YouTube video of the team singing his signature song, 'Lean On Me,' and was moved enough to make this surprise visit. But it wasn't until he admitted to writing the tune that the athletes realized who he was. "I wrote that song almost 40 years ago," he told them. "I was a singer. My name is Bill Withers." It was at that point the crowd acknowledged the legend before them with a vivacious round of applause.
At Withers' request, the team reprised their version of song with linebacker Marquis Simmons nervously leading off with a beautiful sounding solo of the first verse before the rest of the team joined in. "I want the YouTube version," Withers told them while getting them started with the piano riff.
Withers capped his appearance with some friendly advice for the young men, easily ensuring none of them will be late to a team meeting ever again. Check out the full video below.
